Alchemist's Transmutation

Turning magic into gold.

Known under several names such as Distill Gold and once little more than a fable, Alchemist's Transmutation is the magic that turns lesser metals into precious gold. Before the End of All Things, the spell was rare and expensive, requiring so much effort to coax enough magic into the ritual that it was known by only a handful. Afterward, with magic flowing more freely than ever and no jealous gods preventing mortal magic or artifice, it has become a great deal easier to cast. Unfortunately, with the end of all civilization and the remnants still struggling to rebuild, the value of gold is questionable... While the magic components are required to make it in high demand.
Still, immortals and mortals alike never cease to desire wealth.

Effect

Through the sacrifice and use of magical reagants, a mage can use Alchemist's Transmutation to turn another matter into gold. The closer the matter already is to gold, the less the caster will have to sacrifice, which is why the spell typically focuses on other metals. The exact quantity of gold acquired depends on three factors; the skill of the caster, how much magical fuel they chose to consume, and what version of the spell they are using. The Earth version of the spell, Transmute to Gold, is the most effective, while the Necrotic and Blood versions are by far the least effective.
Alchemist's Transmutation, in any form, is a Ritual spell that takes hours to cast. Elemental forces are harnessed and captured to power the spell, channeled through valuable reagents that are destroyed during the process. In the Old World, some of these rites were in the guise of bubbling beakers and the trappings of science, or dramatic rituals to appease gods or demons.
After the End of All Things, neither are required, though some still enjoy the theatrics.
