Lunara, the Nightmother (loo-NAHR-ra)

Primeval Goddess of The Moons, Darkness, and Winter

For as long as the moons have watched over the world, Lunara has watched the world through them. One of the older Primeval Deities, Lunara is regarded as being one of the most well-known deities, though not necessarily well-liked; the fear of the dark is a universal one, and while the lights of the moons do certainly help, they do not fully mitigate the fears that mortals have of what lingers in the shadows.   Lunara does not ask for much from her worshippers, merely asking that they act as guides for those lost in the dark, and - alongside her handmaiden Adlye - reveal the secrets lost to time. Despite her reputation as a calm guiding figure, Lunara is a surprisingly unpredictable character. But like the phases of the moons she has dominion of, her moods are constantly shifting and changing; sometimes she is kind and matronly, other times cold and curt, and on rare occasions she can be little more than a weeping wreck.

Lunara's holy symbol consists of two moons, one in the centre and one split into two crescents, with one being a light blue and another a light green.

Tenets of Faith

Let the lights of the moons and the shadows of the night protect you, both from the burning light of fanatical good and the absolute darkness of evil.
Walk unbridled and untethered, finding and forging new memories and experiences.
Protect those who walk the dangerous night. Be their guide until they reach safety.

Holidays

The day of Night's Eyes - Not a set day, this holiday lands on the night where the twin full moons are at their largest.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Lunara is shown as a human woman with skin that appears either silver or a dark blue, with a series of silver glowing runes traced across her arms. Her eyes are heterochromatic, with the left one being a sea blue, and the right one a jade green, to represent the two moons. A halo resembling the twin moons is framed behind her head. She is often dressed in flowing blue, green, and white robes that trail behind her, carved from a piece of the night sky itself.

Mental characteristics

Intellectual Characteristics

Lunara is, at her core, a kind and motherly figure. She treats her worshippers and devotees as if they were her her own kin, and cares deeply for their wellbeing.   However, Lunara's mood is - much like the phases of her twin moons - constantly changing and shifting, though much like the phases of the moons there is also predictability to it. Those who communicate with her would find her to be enthusiastic and joyous one day, subdued and tranquil on another, or overwhelmed by sadness and rage on another.   By following the rotation of her moons, one could predict her moods. When the moons appear new, she is filled with joy, but when the moons are full she becomes notably more aggressive and short-tempered, though nowhere near to the degree of her sister.

Worshippers of Lunara

Lunara is one of the most well-known and widely-worshipped Gods in Itaxia. Her followers tend to act as guides in both the spiritual and physical sense; Lunara's worshippers often act akin to therapists, trying to help people unearth issues they didn't know they had; other worshippers - often known as the Moonlight Guides - will act as physical guides, travelling the lands at night to find lost wanderers and take them to safety. This does give them a somewhat odd reputation, with many considering them both comforting and creepy, but the Guides are just happy to help.   Lunara and her followers place great emphasis on a person living for themselves, and experiencing new things. They actually have a degree of kinship with followers of, surprisingly, Neresa; the Goddess of Knowledge much appreciates Lunara's desire to have her followers seek out new things and experiences. Due to their close ties with the Goddess Adlye, many of her worshippers work tirelessly alongside them to unveil secrets thought to be lost to the world.

Clergy

Lunara's priests adorn themselves in robes coloured a light green and a light blue, with her high priests wearing headdresses adorned with two crescent moons, one green and one blue. Her churches are often closed in the day, the majority of their services and congregations taking place at night.

Speech

Fitting her somewhat mercurial personality, Lunara's manner of speech will change depending on the phases of the moons. Sometimes she can be warm and inviting, lavishing others in praise and treating them like beloved children. Other times, she will be cold and curt, saying only what she deems necessary. And sometimes she will not speak, reduced only to a weeping mess.

History

Solarea and Lunara have had a rivalry with each other since the moment they were born. They love each other, but also feud on a constant basic like any siblings do. This feud stems from the belief that the other does a worse job at lighting the world than they do.   Solarea swears by the fact that her sun lights the world and brings it great warmth, and that people do not fear the sun coming out (except for the Drow, but Solarea conveniently forgets that fact).   Lunara's claim is that her lights guided the mortal races through the unsafe nights, guarding them from the beings that might mean them harm.
