Baelon Haywich

Grand Justicar of the Order of the Golden Stag

Baelon Haywich is the Grand Justicar of the Order of the Golden Stag, one of the oldest of the Temple of the Divines' Orders-Militant. He assumed the position of Grand Justicar in 846 I.R. at the age of twenty-four, the youngest to ever take the role. When the former Grand Justicar unexpectedly died after running afoul of some vagrants in the city of Riverton, the Inner Circle was convened to elect a new leader. Of them, Baelon was the youngest. In fact, he was also the youngest to ever hold the title of Chief Magistrate, having been elevated to this position at the age of twenty. Many believe that being a cousin of King Francis Leopold III and the youngest son of Duke Faustus Leopold had a part to play in this fact and his subsequent election to the position of Grand Justicar.   Since his election, however, Baelon has proved himself worthy of holding the position. He has worked tirelessly to see that justice is dispensed not only throughout the duchy he calls home, but across most of Brisland and beyond as well. He has sent more missions of the Order abroad in the last four years than his predecessors had in two decades, expanding the influence of the Order even across the sea to the western realms. While in the past the order was content to maintain order at home, Baelon has a vision of spreading the Law of Praedus to all lands.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Baelon Haywich grew up in the city of Northampton. As the youngest son of the Duke - Faustus Leopold - and nephew of King Francis Leopold II, Baelon had a very privileged upbringing. He was always privy to the finest things in life, even if his father paid him little attention. As the youngest of three sons, his place among the Orders-Militant was decided almost the day he was born. His primary tutor as a child was a devout follower of Praedus, and his education in matters of legislation and judicial issues was pronounced by this fact. He knew that he would eventually join the Order of the Golden Stag, and looked forward to traveling to the warmer climes of the southern city. He excelled in all matters both academic and physical in his training, and took his place as a Chief Justicar at the age of sixteen. Only four years later, he rose to the rank of Chief Magistrate; and soon after was elected to lead the Order itself.

Education

Baelon Haywich was tutored from among the best men available in the Duchy of Northampton. From an early age he was taught the lessons of the six-fold path by the local Speakers of the Temple of the Divines. As mentioned before, one such Speaker was a fervent follower of Praedus, the lord of the truth, the path and the law; the Divine of honor, law, authority, order, justice, and loyalty. This focus in his early education would shape his own path dramatically.   As he grew, Baelon continued to focus on the matters of the law; learning not only about the dictates of the faith but also of secular law. He studied the legislation of his native Brisland, neighboring Remaria and Teugoras, and even the far-off Marsden Empire. As he learned to wield the sword, he continued to devote time to his studies. When not in the training yard or at his books, he could often be found in the keep's chapel debating matters of faith, morality, and justice with the Speakers there.

Intellectual Characteristics

Baelon is fascinated with all matters of the law, and he is fervent in his devotion not only to the Path, the Truth, and Praedus; but also to upholding the law of man. He sees society as a pot at the boil; a seething, bubbling mass about to spill over the edges and into the fires of damnation. He works day and night to stave off this eventual crumbling of the systems of law and order he holds so dear. To him, the worst nightmare is anarchy; and in his mind, mankind is only a gentle push away from slipping into the abyss.
