Maginsula
Maginsula is a city built across two continents and an island in between. It is divided into three different sections, each ruled by a different political entity. Western Maginsula (also called Human Maginsula) is on one continent. It is ruled by Duke Linnington, a subject of King Viridi, of the human kingdom of Terastios. Eastern Maginsula (also called Elvish Maginsula) is on a different continent. This is the seat of government for King Altivus, the king of the elvish kingdom of Silvamabilia. In between these entirely separate kingdoms, there is a little island. Often nicknamed Arcane Island, the most famous feature of this island is the Arcane University. The university is run by a council of the the top professors of magic. These professors hold the political power to make any decisions regarding this island, as it is considered an independent entity from either Terastios or Silvamabilia. Both the humans and elves would like to lay claim to this island, but do not wish to go to war with each other over it; therefore, the island remains, necessarily, an independent entity.
Maginsula was founded several hundred years ago by a half-elf named Vignosa (though certain elves would like to believe she was a full-blooded elf). Not fitting in particularly with either humans or elves, she chose instead to build a strong tower on this island in between, wherein she began to pursue knowledge of every kind. She collected and read books, and experimented with all kinds of magic to learn all that she could about the world. Pilgrims of knowledge began to flock to her tower and seek to learn from this all-knowing woman. Vignosa would teach her disciples, and as more eager students arrived, these disciples would in turn teach the younger generation. Merchants and traders arrived, and began building up communities on either side of the island. Bridges were constructed in between. Thus the city of Maginsula built up on either side.
Eventually, Vignosa's studies taught her enough that she no longer needed to be bound to this earth. Content to leave the education of future mages in the hands of her followers, Vignosa left Maginsula to travel throughout the world and other dimensions - at least, there are various theories about this. Vignosa is believed to have essentially ascended to become a deity, and those who remain in Maginsula now worship her, as they worship Dasos, Seir, and Sidik (the other popular deities of humans and elves).
As Maginsula prides itself on being a place of free thinking, and encourages all to study and learn all they can, free thinkers have convinced Duke Linnington to outlaw slavery, even as the rest of Terastios continues to war with and enslave orcs. But after all, orcs ought to be free to think, study and learn just as much as humans or elves, shouldn't they? This generation ought not to be held as slaves simply because their ancestors worshiped Apatii. However, while this line of thinking is what led to the declaration against slavery within Maginsula, it unfortunately is not the line of thinking held by everyone in town, and suspicion against orcs remains strong.
