Hot Summer in Snow City

Hot Summer in Snow City is basically fantasy Twilight. It's awful and everyone loves it.   It tells the story of Daveka, a young and impressionable Snow Elf who is really angsty but only makes like two facial expressions. She is caught in a dangerous and steamy romance with Summer, a Drow who found her when she was lost in the Underdark, who fell in love with her and disguised himself with light skin to live among the Snow Elves and watch her sleep and other creepy shit like that.   Their relationship is complicated by Felor, who is a literal wolf that Deveka also has feelings for, even though he's full of testosterone and probably wouldn't make the greatest partner.   The story is basically an almost endless badly written back and forth of will they/won't they. The characters exude such little charisma and seem incapable of making any good choices.

Purpose

No one is really sure who the author of this story is, so they aren't sure if they associate more with the protagonists, one of the love interests, or another character. But generally people assume that the author just had fantasies that weren't coming true so decided to write the smut and got lucky with its popularity.   Others theorize that whomever wrote it was unsatisfied with the chasm that had been drawn between Snow Elves and Drow and hoped that this book would help to convince them to put aside their differences and join together in companionship.

Public Reaction

Despite how objectively terrible this book (and later series) is, it captured the hearts of many young people all over the world. Maybe it was the danger? Maybe it was the forbidden love? Maybe it was not being educated enough to know that the way the characters treated each other was not examples of healthy romances at all and instead of being idolized, should be seriously condemned. Nevertheless, there are now thousands of pieces of fanfiction out there that were inspired by the book and I seriously fear for he future.
