Maowrian Trials

The Maowrian Trials is a series of compulsory trials placed before all citizens of Maowri when they become an adult at the age of 18.   The kaiurus, or participants, are brought once a year to remote micro-islands off of the primary island of Maowri, sometimes several miles away. They are marooned there with nothing apart from the other kaiurus, and must fend for themselves. These micro-islands are extremely inhospitable, and spend most of the year submerged under the ocean water. This gives the kaiurus a finite amount of time to find food, shelter, and a way back to the mainland. Those that make it back are welcomed as full citizens of Maowri.   While the stakes of these trials seem impossible to outsiders, the kaiurus have trained their whole life for exactly this. The Maowrian people are natural fishermen, and start fishing as early as 3 years old. They are natural swimmers, and the importance of survival skills and ingenuity are taught at a very young age. These trials are still however extremely dangerous. The micro-islands that are used are at a constant risk of becoming re-submerged, which is one of the biggest risk factors, but also the largest driving force, to succeed in the trials. Kaiurus are encouraged to work together to get off the islands and back to the mainland, however this is not required. Not every kaiurus makes it back home, and those that don't are left to be taken by the ocean.   There are some Maowrians that refuse to take the trials, and those that do refuse are banished from the island of Maowri, and must make their way on their own.
