Gerecht Keep (GAIR-EKT keep)

Gerecht Keep is the Hall of Justice, Constabulary and Jail for the crown in the town of Del Graffen. It houses the courts, offices, armory, law enforcement and incarceration facilities that serve the town and all associated bauerdoms.

It is renowned for being impenetrable, and no prisoner has ever escaped from its walls.

The keep itself is a series of outer and inner towers, connected by high walls. While the public is welcome inside to conduct legal business of the land, the Konstar (chief constable), the constabulary inner keep and prisons are heavily guarded and kept separate from the rest of the keep.

The current Konstar is a male human known as Sigfried LeClerq, cousin to King Egidius Meijer III. The Konstar is supported by a group of 10 SubKonstars that oversee law and order across the region, as well as run the courts and the prison.

Purpose / Function

Because Del Graffen is governed by a set of bylaws set forth centuries ago by the original ruling crown, a bureaucracy is required to oversee enforcement of those laws. The Gerecht Keep is renowned far and wide as a model of efficiency, fairness and justice. At least, until recent decades when the clerics of Mantidism lost their influence and were driven out of the town by the citizenry. The subtle influence of the The Wondrous Order has removed the check and balance from the system and left and invitation for one-sided, harsh and at times cruel administration of justice.

History

The inner keep, comprising the constabulary was constructed first hundreds of years ago. Over time, municipal structures have been added surrounding the inner keep until an outer keep shell had sealed it in. The public uses these outer keep facilities for legal business, while the law enforcement is heavily guarded in the inner keep.
