Cromerth

When you imagine a lively waterfront market - the shouts of sailors unloading goods and the bustle of vendors peddling wares to passersby - the port city of Cromerth is the perfect picture of such a place. Located on the northern shores of the entrance to the Bay of Blue Feathers, Cromerth is in an ideal location to trade with both incoming ships and overland caravans. The constant influx of goods has made it a hub of commerce within the Northern Trade Cities. Unlike some of the surrounding ports, which not only foster trade but also put forth local goods and materials, Cromerth focuses its economy almost entirely on the exchange of capital, though some manufacturing does exist. It is a prime spot for talented artisans to set up shop, with easy access to high quality materials and the busy regional shipping lanes that reach around the continent.   The old city walls, built of smoothly cut quarried stone brought south from the Hearthridge, once encircled the entire settlement, but after decades of successful trade Cromerth has far outgrown them. They now protect a number of civic buildings, important residences, banks, and the city school. Around that lie criss-crossed streets of homes, shops, and warehouses.   A series of piers lead from the shoreline out into the water, with smaller docks branching off those for the mooring of large ships, smaller boats and ferry-craft. Around the piers sit storage buildings for goods coming into the city from the water, or waiting be to be loaded up and shipped out. The quantity of trade creates a hectic atmosphere, and apprentices can be seen dashing from the docks to offices and back throughout the day, and sometimes into the night. Berths are assigned based on type of good, and the standing of a particular merchant with local councils and guild leaders. Agricultural products make up a large section of the southern piers. The next block is reserved for general goods, such as textiles, and tools. There is a wharf for luxury items, including ceramics, fine metalwork, jewelry and perfumes. Last is a series of spaces for raw materials, stone, leathers, and timber. In addition to multiple market squares where a seller can reserve a space for a cart or stall, the city also boasts a small amphitheatre, an auctioneer's stage, and a large park planted with trees brought in by tradespeople from around the region.
