Painreaver

The painreaver is a horrific undead abomination created from the body of either a failed Reclamation subject, or one who has gone through the process of Arcanic Augmentation. These creatures were used during the later years of the War of Ascendancy, and continue to be used centuries later, particularly in defense of certain less well-known locations.   These horrifying creatures are particularly useful when subjugation of a population is necessary. The creatures are as deadly as they are frightening, and they have a well-kept notoriety since the War. Even the rumor of their presence is enough to cause entire villages to vacate.

Creation

A painreaver is created in a dark ritual involving the mutilation of a living subject of unique arcane ability. Prime subjects have been those with Celestial blood, or those who have gone through the process of Arcanic Augmentation.   When the body is sufficiently desecrated, the spirit of the creature is trapped in a core of cut Amonite as the subject expires. Through powerful magic, the spirit is stripped of it's personhood, its ambitions replaced with only the desire to serve Meridian until it is physically incapable. The remains of the body are infused with a corrupted magical regeneration, replacing appendages and certain organs that may have been destroyed or removed during the desecration process. These appendages sprout as twisted aberrations of flesh. Due to the improvisational nature of the desecration and regeneration process, no two painreavers are exactly alike.   After regeneration, the defiled spirit is released from the Amonite core and rebound to its reconfigured body.
