Okane Clan

"We may be a smaller clan, but we have our honor and our fighting spirit. But spirit will only get us so far. There may be the day when an alliance will be in our best interest; that day is not today." -Ichiro Iha, Okane Clan's 4th chairman

The Chusett Family

Since the start of the arcusa as organizations, Chusett has been left mostly on its own. This was in part due to the extended duration of military presence and also because until recently, the city hadn't had any real economic promise worth potential conflict. As such, the premier family in Chusset, the Okane, was able to easily maintain a strong grasp of the territory. Despite the common conception of arcusa being nothing more than criminals in suits, the Okane Clan helped mitigate the viewpoint with their efforts in recent efforts to expand Chusett. In fact, the vast majority of expansion work on the city, excluding the railyard and port, is funded mostly by the Okane or their subsidiaries.

Activities

The Okane Clan operates similar to other clans, running a variety of illicit activities in order to generate revenue. Their main source is smuggling through the Murly Port, which let's the clan distribute large quantities of goods to the rest of Pontura.

Gambling

Generally speaking, gambling isn't seen as a major concern in Chusett. With the exception of Organized Crime, Chusett Police rarely break up such rings, and this lets the Okane families run fairly openly. One major location for gambling is the Underground Colosseum, underneath the railyard in which unarmed brawls are held and bets are placed on who will win. The fighters are all volunteer, but there are few rules and injuries are common, and in rare cases fatal.

Smuggling

With the expansion of Murly Port, the Okane has been able to expand their smuggling operations, sneaking firearms, drugs, and other goods through Chusett to the rest of Pontura. There has also been an increase in people trafficking. One current problem plaguing Chusett is the clan loaning fake identification to foreigners to get them in the city, and then taking their papers once they arrive and forcing them to work off their debt. Most the jobs are fairly simple; construction, hosting for clubs, or other reasonable work. Occasionally, however, victims of this trap are placed in positions they can't handle, forced to infiltrate rival families, or even kill, in order to secure their freedom.

Commercial Interests

The Okane Clan has placed a lot of money in the expansion of Chusett, mostly by buying out construction companies. While the expense is high, the clan has used this in order to construct the city how they wish; building hideouts and a complex underground tunnel system intended for a future subway system. While most construction companies give in to the Okane's demands, some, such as TUSC, have been left alone, usually to facilitate other matters such as helping arcusa recently out on parole who can't afford to associate with the clan for some time.

Assassination Attempt on the Chairman of Okane

-Caleb Downing

Late on Friday night, Chairman of the Okane Clan, Ichiro Iha, entered a restaurant in downtown Chusett with Captain of the Takejiro family and 13 other arcusa. Shortly after, another man entered and fired 15 rounds from revolvers he was carrying. A nearby detective, Shamtan Payne, along with a member of the Kurasawa family, Akio Sato, were nearby and charged through the door. Akio dove in front of the chairman in order to protect him and was shot by the perpetrator; Detective Payne shot the unidentified man in the shoulder in response. After arresting the man, it was discovered the rounds used in the shooting were made of rubber and non-lethal. The owner of TUSK, Joey Stonejaw, and a local lawyer, Setsuna Kinue, were also nearby. Kinue has taken interest in defending the assailant. No further information has been released to the public.

I love the quote at the beginning. It gives a real sense of how strong and determined this clan is. The story of the assassination attempt is really gripping, and a fantastic addition to this article.

Fun fact: The assassination attempt was my players first session in the world. All the names of the people who showed up to help are the players' characters!

Really interesting article - I like the description of the clan activities. The people trafficking got me most intrigued. What would happen if someone refused to do something like infiltrate a rival family? I assume nothing good.
