The Devil that Haunts the Train Tracks

The Pantry Devil is a tall, thin, well-dressed figure that has a single, floating eye resting above its wing covered face and a grin of sharp teeth. It is the Devil that haunts the train tracks, and it offers wealth beyond imagine in exchange for the very thing that keeps you as yourself:   Your soul.
The Devil that Haunts the Train Tracks is a common tale used in a small village to warn of an old set of train tracks located on the other side of the woods. It is a cautionary story that still inspired fear and unrest in the superstitious adults as well as the children of the village it is told in. It is said that those who disobey the wisdom of the tale go strange, before eventually disappearing forever.

Summary

The tale is a small town myth, localised to a single village that is located nearby to old train tracks that barely get used.   The myth tells a tale of a Devil who lingers around the train tracks, who will eat right through your soul with razor-sharp teeth and blind you with a gaze. The myth tells tales of long forgotten village people who ventured to the train tracks to ask The Pantry Devil for wealth and good fortune, in exchange for your soul to be eternally bound to his.   Those who sold their souls were feared as they had become as monsters, unhinged and reverent of things outside of their small town. Most versions describe the soul exchange to not have worked out in the persons favour, with The Pantry Devil not giving them actual fortune or wealth in exchange for the soul.

Historical Basis

The tale is based off of The Pantry Devil's real job of collecting souls. However, he refuses to ever comment on why he chose those train tracks in particular.
