Lizardfolk, Marine

Coastal and benthic Lizardfolk have adapted to marine environments, both fresh- and saltwater. All individuals resemble terrestrial lizardfolk, with the addition of gills, webbing between fingers and toes, the ability to seal all orifices against fluid intrusion, and a stronger nicitating membrane to protect the eyes without inhibiting vision. Individuals and genetic lines may adapt for additional circumstances, including harder scale plating to deal with excess depths.
Like their terrestrial cousins, they have little need of clothing for protection. They are more likely to disdain armor, as it inhibits aquatic movement. They will maintain limited cloth covering for modesty, or straps and bandoliers for utility. Long coats are not uncommon; they cover the entire body, and can be easily removed.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Genetically similar to terrestrial lizardfolk, they maintain the ability to interbreed. However, offspring of such unions are of the mother's subspecies.

Growth Rate & Stages

Infrequently, elder members of the population (around 1 in 8000) undergo severe change between age 140-160. They grow to immense size, and adapt completely for underwater living. Such individuals can reach 40-60 feet long, and live for an additional 300 years. Limbs adapt to fins or flippers, the neck elongates to a minimum of 6 feet, and profile becomes piscine. These parriarchs are revered for their age, strength, and wisdom.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Names as a physical description, typically two combine words. Should a major life-changing event occur, names are often changed to formalize the change. All names are gender neutral. Should further clarification be necessary, a surname is appended by clan, city, township, or other designated home.   Ambassador Silvertongue of Cerandon-in-Sildramore   Other examples: Springstep, Knottail, Goldeyes, Ninefinger, Silvertongue

Major Organizations

The Marine Lizardfolk clans still bear a great deal of sway in the politics of Abuulon.

History

It is unknown how long ago Marine Lizardfolk split off from their terrestrial cousins. Socially, they have been completely distinct for the current calendar age (4000 years).   Marine Lizardfolk were native to the oceanic region that became Abuulon. Many individual clans existed, with a formal procedure for all interactions.   During the emmigration of Salimar population from Sildramore, a political division occurred among the clans between those that would accept the refugees and those opposed. A civil war followed, in which the winner was decided by aid from the Salimar. The resulting alliance became the beginnings of the nation of Abuulon.
