MonKai Character in Illios | World Anvil

MonKai

(a.k.a. Gravekeeper)

The God of Death, Afterlife, and the Soul.   MonKai is the god who holds claim to the souls of the Dead. When someone dies, there soul passes to Monkai's realm, where it is judged. He is one of the Nine Great Divines, the Gods that created the world and shaped those who live on it.   When someone is judged, they must justify there actions in life, if MonKai deems that the person acted unjustly in life, they are sent to the hells. If they did act justly in life, they are free to move on to the afterlife.   It is possible to be brought back from the Dead, provided MonKai has not yet rendered his judgement upon the Soul.   From witness testimony by those who have been brought back from death it is known that MonKai resides in a grand, yet plain, temple, this temple is described as being made of marble and black stone, the temple interior is described as being an endless hall, with marble flooring and gold inlay set in intricate patterns. The Souls line up along the center of the Temple as they wait to be judged by MonKai, the floor below the temple is said to be transparent almost like a dark haze, revealing the River of Despair, the channel that the Souls found unworthy by MonKai follow to the Hells. The Temple itself has dozens of Ionic columns, built in marble with black accents, stretching from floor to ceiling. MonKai himself has been said to reside on a raised dais at the end of the temple, a colored glass window behind him, depicting the Eye of MonKai, the holy symbol of the God of Souls. On the dais is MonKai's throne a simple White Black throne. MonKai himself is described as a plain man, short grey hair, a gold circlet with a black gem resting in the center dressed in a white red robe with his Pike at his side.     MonKai is associated with the Pike.   The smallest of the two moons of Illios is Nirvaren, this moon is where the souls of the dead, whom MonKai has judged to be worthy of the afterlife, are sent. It is said that Nirvaren is a true paradise, where the Souls of the dead find rest after a life well lived.   Followers of MonKai often pray to Monkai on behalf of the dead kneeling by the body of the dead or simply standing over there grave if there is one, holding the symbol of the Eye of MonKai "Gravekeeper, may you judge (Name of the person if you were close to them/if not then just "This Soul") fairly, may you judge them worthy of Virvaren so they may know peace in the hereafter."

Tenets of Faith

Nothing is more sacred then the soul.   All souls should be honored even those of sinners, and helped to find there way to MonKai.   The last words of the dying should never be left to fall on deaf ears.   The body is merely a vessel for the Soul, as long as a body is an active vessel of a Soul, it should be treated with respect (MonKai does not condone necromancy outright, to his followers such a practice is more so shunned, as long as only the corpse is being manipulated, and the Soul is left alone.)

Divine Goals & Aspirations

To Judge the Souls of all the Dead.   To protect the Souls of the Dead whom are judged worthy.   To preserve the land of Illios, which MonKai helped create.
