The Shard of the Abyss

The Shard of the Abyss is a magical amulet with such mana prowess that it was locked away deep in the Beholder stronghold on Goliath mountain to be kept away from any wandering eyes or magi. It's said to be a an actual piece of the shadow dimension, Abyssia. Held in a think layer of Sunstone it gleams with this sinister black light. It almost appears to be sucked out of the space it possesses.   In 2088 it was used to create a portal to Abyssia by the made mage who created it, Alcavari Bex. He attempted to do so in a vain attempt to travel there and return with his love whom he'd accidentally trapped there years prior. The very creation of the portal created a time warp and before the Beholders could respond a demon from the Wither shut the portal, ending Alcavari and his loves life.   Although the portal was closed, the amulet remained as a gruesome reminder of what happens when one deals with black magic. The Beholders stored it under 500 tons of the hardest metals and locks so that no one would ever unlock the portal again. Before the fort was albeit wiped out by the Storm around Crestfall, a 24 hour watch detail was on the amulet.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The shard inside the amulet cage is a hyper-concentrated piece of Abyssian ground. It's mere existence in this dimension is enough to set off cataclysmic events. It is a material of pure dark magic mana just barely contained by the strength of the Sunstone exterior.
