Born the son of a butcher in Rouvray, Colman was always going to be a butcher. As soon as he was old enough, he was put to work making deliveries for his father around the city. As he got older he became an apprentice and learnt the trade. When he was old enough to travel on his own, he was set to work like his older brothers before him selling meat goods to villages and towns around Cleroy. It was while doing this that he met Aedwen Polforth, the grocer of Millfield. He made every excuse to take the route that covered Millfield to see her, convinced that she was his one true love, before announcing to his father that he was leaving to start his own butchery there.
