Dragons

"Creatures that dominate the sky. Gargantuan shadows that every mortal has to look up to in order to comprehend raw power. They are mighty, clever, curious, intelligent, wrathful, considerate. Their personalities are as varied as their hide and their presence as intimidating as a rabid beast is to a small child. Very interesting creatures, dragons are".

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Since dragons possess the ability to Polymorph they can reproduce in any manner conceivable by the forms they choose.

Growth Rate & Stages

A dragon has 4 stages of life, each one longer than the last.
  • Wyrmling: From the moment they hatch, they are considered wyrmlings, baby dragons, until they reach their fifth year.
  • Young: Starting on their 6th year the wyrmlings grow larger than a typical beast and for the next 94 years they will keep growing until they reach adulthood.
  • Adult: From their first century, mature dragons grow more slowly compared to their youth, taking a full 700 years on average until they reach the Ancient status.
  • Ancient: The final stage of their long life. From their 801 years and onward they are considered ancient creatures, capable of massive feats of strength and destruction with very few rivals in the entirety of existence. From here on out they will grow indefinitely over the centuries.

Biological Cycle

Dragons are unique creatures. Despite being subject to changes by the passing of time, them growing old simply makes them more powerful. The more ancient the dragon the more awe-inspiring their power becomes.   Despite this, most dragons are, as a matter of fact, able to die. There have been records of Dragons perishing due to old age, but these are extremely rare cases since their lifespan can reach upwards of 8000 years.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dragons often prefer places of high altitude or low altitude depending on their elemental alignment, often deciding to live around mountain peaks as well as valleys or forests. In other cases they like temperate climate and choose a low mountain range to find cave systems big enough for them and their hoard.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragons are capable of seeing almost perfectly in the dark. Additionally, their sensory capabilities are so strong that all of them are able to locate creatures without the need of sight, using hearing and smell.   Some members of the species can use the tremors in the earth to navigate underground.

Gender Ideals

Dragons have the capacity to use Polymorph once they grow old enough, as such they can change to fit whatever form they please.

History

Created by all Primordial forces in existence, these creatures were a result of The Sky, Earth, Sea, Upper Air, Night and the Pit combining their capacity for creation. Whether it was voluntary or accidental nobody knows. They appeared in the world during the time of peace between Gaia and Ouranous, before the Titans had been born.   The first Dragons created were those now hailed by the present dragons and Dragonborn as Dragon Gods. their existence is very similar to that of the Gods and other divine beings of old. Immortal, eternal and extraordinarily powerful.   Bahamut is the Platinum Dragon, the father and progenitor to all metallic dragons, as well as that of Gem Dragons. He was a figure of virtue and justice amongst creation. A Holy Dragon God of Justice, his children called him. He is the only Metallic Dragon of his kind. His essence lies in the Plane of Upper Air, ready to reform his body should it fall in battle. He is a Celestial Dragon and his power competes with that of an Olympian.   Tiamat, sister of Bahamut, is the Dragon Goddess of Greed and the eternal rival of her brother Bahamut. Among Chromatic Dragons she is unique, with five heads, each representing a color and element. Her essence lies in Tartarus, ready to reform over time should she fall in battle. She is an Archfiend Dragon and her power compares with that of a Titan.   Metallic and Chromatic Dragons feel a compulsion to a type of behavior depending on their scale color. As such, chromatic dragons are largely considered evil and metallic ones good. However these compulsions can be overcome, as there have been examples of chromatic dragons overcoming their evil nature and metallic dragons letting their lust for treasure overcome them, leading them to do evil things for the sake of their hoard.   Gem Dragons were a middle ground. Their alignment lies in the neutral spectrum. Often very logical and passive, but with one exception on Obsidian Dragons who were notorious for enjoying slaughter. There are more types of dragons, less well known, typically. Flame, Void, Mithral, Wind, Sea and Cave Dragons are much more rare creatures, but there are whispers of their appearance over the great land.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Metallic Dragons have, as a majority, from neutral to positive relationships with humans and other humanoids. The most positive example being The Silver Temple, where dragons have taken an active role in educating and raising mortals. On other cases dragons live in hiding, away in the wilderness or polymorphed and living amongst the mortals as just another person in their cities or villages.   Chromatic Dragons, on the other hand, have relationships that can go from hunter-prey to tyrannical and worse. Be it as a food source or slaves, mortals always are and will be below them. As such in the event that chromatic dragons have a following of mortals it would be because they are forced or have formed a willing following out of fear or actual worship of the powerful creatures.
