Ierus

It is 6570 A.D., 4553 years in the future. Humans, now a space-faring nomadic civilization, has been travelling the stars without a home for almost two thousand years. They have spread far and wide, with FTL Travel letting them travel on average 5 light years a day. Many humans are explorers or diplomats, dealing with other intelligent races in trade and being hired to survey new planets for some.   Ierus, a planet in a solar system surrounded by a dangerous opaque electromagnetic supernova debris field, was once a colony of Earth nearly 4000 years ago. After a star went supernova 60 light years away, 100 years after the colony's founding, it was abandoned as the solar system was swallowed by a dangerous-to-navigate debris field, then called Medusa's Head.   System SOL-18154 was declared uninhabitable by the Earth Alliance of Nations in the year 2432 A.D. and all attempts to contact/help the colony were ceased. Ierus had a collapse of all order, wreckage suggesting that the colonists attempted to evacuate but failed. Disorder and an inability to manufacture the parts needed to maintain the technology required to run the colony led to a breakdown in communications between settlements.   Thousands of years later, Ierus is in the middle of an industrial revolution brought on by the invention of High-pressure steam engines. Few pieces of working technology remain from the ancient times, one being self-replicating nanomachines that were once used by high-ranking colonists to help doctors treat ailments, military protect civilians, and builders terraform. The nanomachines' self-replicating process was controlled, but with the breakdown of order, it went on unregulated, leading to nanomachines replicating until atmospheric capacity was met. Now known simply as Alteration, the people of Ierus treat the ancient advanced technology as magic.
