Elvish

Orginally the languge of academics, scholars, and high society, after the War of the Divine, those who spoke Elvish of any sort were persecuted. Most of the books written in this lost language were destroyed if found to prevent people from learning and using what may have been written. As a result of centuries of persecution, even those born as elves often don't know their language, or at least in its entirety. Either from trying to hide their race, or not being around elves who can speak their language, unfortunately the Elvish language is slowing being lost.

The lucky few who can read and speak Elvish often are under protection and kept in hiding. Rewriting and preserving ancient texts to stop the loss of an entire culture. As a result, these scholars are hunted by many kingdoms. On the other side, some elven scholars are captured by kingdoms who want the ancient texts translated to use the knowledge and science for destruction and power. These unfortunate few are kept in deplorable conditions and thought of more as a commodity to be used than as a person. Occasionally used as a sign of power, during inter-kingdom meetings, they will bring out their token elven scholar to show their wealth as a symbol. Even going so far as to trade between kingdoms to get a desired scholar, if the elf hasn't been performing well or been difficult, they sometimes will only be worth a few bushels of wheat to the ruler.
