Aradorian Farmhouse

The Aradorian Farmhouse is a simple building, and they dot the countryside of the Erosian Peninsula. Such houses are common on the outskirts of the larger cities of Arador, and dominate many of the villages throughout the nation. Their style can be found in many places throughout Faenir, though the Aradorians are alone in their lack of embellishment to the simple design. If one were to travel to Thurengol, they would be greeted with the humble appearance of simple thatched houses, crowded around the river, and such an aesthetic is appreciated amongst the common Aradorian people.

Purpose / Function

Stemming from their Erosian roots, the farmers of Arador build their houses for function over form. They are built to fit the needs of the family, as well as host quests, and so most farmhouses will include an extra room or two to house any relations or travellers who need a night's rest. Usually the houses are designed as places of rest, with comfortable interiors, and spacious living areas, and almost always boast a sizeable kitchen with a wood-burning oven outside.

Architecture

The normal design of an Aradorian Farmhouse is simple, using the materials commonly found in the Aradorian countryside, wood and thatch. It never gets very cold in Arador, so stone is not required to keep heat in, though some wealthier farmers have stone chimneys installed to facilitate a fireplace. The farmhouses are usually wide rather than long, with a large porch along the front side of the house. The rooms are divided along the centre of the house, with bedrooms exclusively on one side, and living spaces exclusively on the other. Some superstitions state that living areas should face east, and bedrooms face west, but this practice is not overly common.

History

Whilst modern farmhouses are not usually built of stone, older ones might be, especially if built before the Randirion Empire rose to prominence. The ancient Erosians preferred stone to wood, and spent great effort quarrying stone for their dwellings. If a town or farm is built around an ancient building of this sort, the modern inhabitants rarely update the design.
