When she was 6-11 (I haven’t decided yet), Jadine Baatjies was "possessed" by a spirit (Keep in mind she is witchdoctor/can contact spirits). I use quotation marks because Jadine wasn’t possessed per say but the spirit resided in her and Jadine was able to talk with them. Jadine soon found out that the spirit’s name was Vanessa Barlow and she was murdered. Vanessa too was a witchdoctor and could contact spirits, so she found it was fitting to inhabit Jadine, the most powerful witchdoctor after Vanessa’s passing. When Jadine was talking to Vanessa as a young child, she would always talk out loud and this would always worry her older sister, Dontae (They had to flee from their home country and they left their parents behind because they didn’t have enough money to transport all of them, so Dontae raised Jadine herself). Dontae thought that she could be hallucinating/delusional, but the doctors couldn’t find anything, even after a couple years of sessions with Jadine. Eventually, Dontae asked Eoberona’s (the country they are in) leading doctor/eldest princess, Rose (because at this point in the timeline they know each other), and Rose suggests that Jadine could be in contact with the dead. This is, of course, true. As Jadine has grown older, more spirits have “inhabited” her body (none as powerful as Vanessa, though, just people that have passed away that for some reason, cannot rest in the afterlife so they help Jadine with whatever she needs). Jadine admits to this as she had been feeling very scared about admitting this as people were kind of passing her condition off to insanity.
