Battle of Ocilion Military Conflict in Iaforis | World Anvil

Battle of Ocilion

The Battle of Ocilion was a siege that began on 3 Tenth Month 291 OA, concluding with the city's sacking on 27 Tenth Month 291 OA. The former armies of Ocila and the Murgothi Confederacy were raised as undead and marched on the city. The capital of Ocila was defended by the commonfolk unable to flee and a small number of city guards left behind to protect it.

Prelude

After putting down the Foxdelian Separatists in 286 OA, King Marcus III marched his army north to Awira in order remove those who funded the separatists from power. This kicked off what is known as the War of Retribution. The Murgothi Confederacy was brought into the war when the Amethyst Trade Bloc struck a trade deal with them in exchange for military support against Ocila. After the Confederacy's failed seige of [tootip:Castle guarding the northern pass between Ocila and the Murgoth Desert]Dune's End[/tooltip], they retreated back into the desert and marched south around Avolenth's Spine. This forced King Marcus out of Awira so he could defend the capital. During the ensuing battle both armies were destroyed by rogue Ocilian battlemages. King Marcus and his heir were killed as well.   As panic swept through Ocilion, {tooltip:priests of Malthrax]Brokers of Malthrax[/tooltip] were sent to the battlefield to resurrect the king. Instead, the city quickly received word that both armies had been raised as undead thralls and were marching on the city. The Royal Family and their supporters fled the city, leaving behind a small contingent of guards and soldiers to defend it.

Battle

On 3 Tenth Month, the undead forces surrounded Ocilion, buring the small villages that resided outside its walls and killing those who had remained behind.Details on what followed are unclear due to the lack of surviving witnesses. What is known comes from the scrying of powerful mages from across the world that took in the war. The army used modern seige tactics and showed emense discipline, something almost unheard of for undead. No leader was ever identified. Most people believe the Brokers planned this and controlled the army from afar, though no evidence of this has ever been found. For three weeks, the undead forces starved out the defenders all while constructing seige equipment and hurling rocks and fireballs at the walls. With the Ocilan forces weakened, the undead breached the walls on 27 Tenth Month, killing all inside.

Aftermath

The fall of Ocilion was ultimately symbolic of the fall of the Kingdom of Ocila. In practice, the kingom fell when the army was destroyed. While it existed for another generation on paper, few recognized its authority and many of those who had suported the Foxdelian Separatists rose up and took control of their ancestral land back.   To this day, the undead that took the city remain, seemingly unconcerned with the comings and goings of the world.
