The Gallery of Silence

We followed the tunnel to its end, but the end did not seem natural. With picks we extended the tunnel. After some time, we opened an entrance to a huge cavern. I shall not speak of it further.
— Ice Elf explorer
Deep under the surface of Liggjavard, in a nearly inaccessible issteinn marble cavern, lies an almost unknown wonder of the world. Discovered, and hastily abandoned, by a group of Ice Elf explorers, the cavern known as the Gallery of Silence rests in the dark.   To the explorers who found it, the cavern itself appeared natural, though it seemed odd that there were no exits, no sign of water coming in or going out. The air in the cavern is still and close, and sounds are oddly muted. Boots on rock do not echo, voices do not carry, and even deliberately clashing weapons and shields together does not make that much noise in the Gallery.   The most disturbing aspect of the Gallery is the statues. The cavern has several hundred of them, carved in the most exquisite detail. They all appear to be Ice Elves, of various classes, ages, and occupations. Navigators with their spears, explorers with rope and hook, even children with books and toys. The statues are organized in groups of 15-20, arranged around the cavern with some distance between each group.   None of the explorers present at the discovery saw any maker's marks on the statues, nor could they determine how the cavern would have been filled with such a quality of craft. With the assumption that it was Snaerstjarna's work, they decided to close off the entrance they had made and do their best to forget what they had seen.
It is a place of deep magic, of holy magic. We shall not return.

Warning
The Ice Elves of Liggjavard consider the statue-filled cavern a holy place, so holy it should be avoided. They will not take kindly to anyone who tries to find or investigate the Gallery of Silence.

Ooh. I like the eerie nature of this. Why do the ice elves consider it *so* holy that it shouldn't be visited? Is it full of potent magic? Is it something to do with the statues? Have there been any who wished to return to the cavern against the wishes of the others?
