The Styx

"This is it isn't it? You've finally lost your damn mind."

Colin shrugged. "There's really nothing left for me here man, you know that. You heard about what that crazy fuck Marcus did to the Drifter girl? Damn near lost my head when I told him to stop." He shivered. "Can't stand it anymore."

"Who the fuck cares what Marcus did? Drifters are filthy Afflicted fuckers. She should be so lucky that she-"

"Fuck Isaac! This is what I'm talking about. It's barbaric. I don't want anything to do with it."

"So what? You're gonna go out in the Styx and get mauled by bears and shit 'cause you've got a bleeding heart? What good are you doing by leaving Haven, and why the Styx?"

"A lot of the Old Cities are lost there. Also, the Drifter wouldn't stop mumbling about them like they were important when she... I want to know what's there. You don't think about arbitrary shit when you die."

"Translation: You have lost your damn mind. Be my guest then, but I'm not scraping your ass up when you get swarmed by those freaky fucking beetles, or pulling you down from a tree cause you got lynched by a Drifter." He pushed open the gate, making a show of gesturing to the dense forest in the distance. Colin adjusted is pack and hesitated just long enough for Isaac to raise a brow at him. "You don't have to go. It's not safe for us out there. Besides, I'm sure Marcu-"

Colin stepped out without another word. To his credit, he didn't even look back as the gates screeched shut behind him... Well, not where anyone could see him at least.

The forest loomed beyond, a great gash on the darkening horizon.

He'd made a huge mistake.

Geography

This is a large forested area spanning most of the continent. The flora has flourished in the days after the end and has taken back many cities over time.
The forest consists of unnaturally large trees and dense foliage. There are many natural springs with few rivers and a handful of lakes interspersed. It is a veritable Garden of Eden to those who know its quirks.

Fauna & Flora

Unnaturally giant trees of all varieties as well as many edible fruits, vegetables, roots and flowers grow sturdy and tall here. Some Drifters believe it was the influence of the compound that spelled doom for humanity that helped aid in the growth and rapid maturation of these plants.
The growth of the beast within went hand in hand with the foliage. Many animals that lived in the wooded areas, predator and prey alike, grew massive and aggressive, with many skittish animals developing and defending territory. Insects grew monstrous as well, with the largest being around the size of your average dog.
Again Drifters link the compound with this change in size and temperament thinking that after it seeped into the environment, it was consumed by the wildlife and changed them.
