Mist-touched
The term 'mist-touched' refers to the widespread belief that prolonged exposure to the Mist can cause a range of negative health-effects. Some of these are considered treatable while others are not. In general, a person who is mist-touched is treated with a great deal of suspicion and fear or, at best, pity.
Being mist-touched is associated with hunting, logging, trade, the guarding of caravans and other professions that require one to spend a good deal of time outside of the protective walls of a city.
Exposure to the Mist is considered to have negative effects on nearly all aspects of human physiology. Infections of the airways, bronchi and lungs, as well as the eyes, nose and ears are counted as the most common side-effects, alongside lethargy, rashes and fevers. However, it is believed by some that more severe side-effects such as intestinal issues, arthritis, palpitations, and apoplexy may also occur.
The most visible sign of being severely mist-touched is the clouding over of the eyes, which some people believe is caused by the Mist physically making its way inside of the person's body. Although some conditions that cause cloudy eyes, such as cataracts, are observed in people with minimal exposure to the Mist, finding the symptom in a patient who has spent a lot of time in the Mist is considered to be a sure sign that they are mist-touched.
Though less readily observable, it is widely believe that long-term exposure to the mist also causes negative effects on the psyche, leading to symptoms like delusions, paranoia, nervousness, temper flares and rash behavior. In fact, some feel that the commonly observed occurrence of hunters and others who spend a good deal of time in the Mist becoming gradually less aware or mindful of the danger it poses to be an early sign of the deterioration of the person's mental faculties.
