Gauntlet of Premonition

Gauntlet of Premonition is a sentient right-handed armor piece that goes by the name of Pre.

Origin

Before The Magic Collapse, people had innate magic powers that can only be dreamed off today. However, because these powers were so wide-spread, it was often used for nefarious reasons.   Presley Griffith was a prominent figure in his community, well liked and appreciated for his work. He had a dream about what his community could be, an ambition for a better future, which he actively pursued. He was an inspiration to his peers, but this didn't go to his ego.   Then he met someone compelled to do evil and bring chaos to his community. And in a stroke of genius, he decided to give Presley a vision of the future, of his community falling in ruin. Presley could not get rid of this overwhelming sense of dread and was overcome with a premonition of imminent disaster. This drove him to paranoia. Then the evil got bored and decided to take matters into his own hands. He killed Presley and bound his soul to a somewhat ornate gauntlet. He then wore this gauntlet while continuing to do evil deeds, further damaging Presley's psyche.

Personality

Presley now goes by the name of Pre. He is reclusive, almost to the point of non-existence. He is still aware of his surroundings, but is a passive spectator. Visions of the future still plague him from time to time.   It's been immensely long since he was human. When The Magic Collapse happened, the gauntlet was lost for a long long time, until someone uncovered it. Many humanoids have wielded him. Most were unremarkable and perished what seemed like a second later. Then there are those who do their evil deeds and he's just along for the ride, scarred and bitter.   He has complete forgotten what is was like to be human. Deep down, he's still that caring person, or... well... caring object that believes in doing good. Every so often, a human comes along that does good, but he's scared and paranoid. Worried what might happen if he ever were to reveal his existence.

Function

This is a legendary, one-of-a-kind piece of equipment, that takes time and a certain alignment to wield to its full potential. As Pre unlocks new spells, he gets his own spell slots separate from the wearer. Pre will unlock a single spell slot per long rest. He starts off with zero spell slots, but will gain spell slots as he unlocks more power. Each spell can only be used once per long rest, so the same spell cannot be used in quick succession.

Attunement

When the wearer attunes to the gauntlet, they get the feat Portent. This allows them to predetermine rolls.

Blessing

When the wearer has worn the gauntlet for a while and Pre witnessed them doing good deeds, he unlocks another capability, a special version of the Find Traps spell.   When casting this spell, the wearer gets a vision of their surroundings within a range of 60 feet. This vision is an out-of-body experience rotating around the body, showing where any traps are and highlighting how these traps are triggered.   Pre now has a single spell slot.

Participation

As the wearer continues to do good, Pre will slowly start to wake up from his slumber. He'll start to participate a little bit more actively in current events. This unlocks the spell Clairvoyance. This allows the wearer to create an invisible sensor to peek or hear something from the location of that sensor.

Revelation

When it becomes clear to Pre that he's being wielded by someone with a strong moral compass, with an impecible track record of good deeds, he'll reveal himself.   This will unlock the spells Divination and Legend Lore.   Divination allows the wearer to ask a question about a specific goal, event or activity to occur within 7 days, at the cost of 25 gp. Pre will then do his best to answer the question accurately and truthfully.   Legend Lore allows the wearer to ask a question about a person, place or object. If Pre somehow knows something about the topic, he'll answer at no cost. If the wearer wants to know more, it will cost 250 gp. Pre will then use divination magic to determine the answer.   Pre will unlock a second spell slot.

Relation

When the wearer has taken great effort in building a friendship with Pre, he'll start to participate in battles intently. This unlocks a special version of the spell Foresight.   For a single minute (10 rounds of combat), the wearer gets a limited ability to see into the immediate future.
  • Advantage on ability checks
  • Automatically succeed dexterity saving throws
  • Advantage on all other saving throws
  • Special advantage on attack rolls; hit is guaranteed, advantage towards critical hit
  • Opponents have disadvantage on attack rolls
Pre now has a third spell slot.

Awakening

Note: the following is just an idea, not sure it will stick.   When the wearer has gone above and beyond and Pre has been actively used in combat, Pre will himself learn a new ability, called Prevailment (homebrew). If the wearer is about the receive a blow that would knock them down (bring them to or below 0 HP), Pre will retcon the situation (read: will have warned the wearer before this situation could ever have happened in the first place) and the opponent will critically fail on their attack (instead).   This ability can only activate if there are still at least two spell slots available and it will consume all remaining spell slots.

Summer Camp footnote

This artifact has knowledge about ancient history and making Pre reveal himself could play an significant (but optional) role in the plot. As far as "lost or discovered" goes, this gauntlet is always in pristine state and "somewhat ornate", resulting in it being looted whenever possible. That it gives Portent when attuned only makes it more worthwhile to wield. So it's in active use, but its true potential is lost and can only be discovered by those deemed deserving by the paranoid soul that goes by the name of Pre.
