Culture of Oghmania

Oghmania is a relatively small community. Because the settlement was built with a singular purpose, so too does everyone play a role in achieving that purpose. They value cooporation and common sense, because those traits are needed for their survival.   But death is near and comes in many forms. It's not uncommon to wait for someone to return home, but they never do. Other times, news of the death of an expedition party reaches the town, which is a stark reminder of just how dangerous exploration is.

Newcomers

The people in Oghmania are very welcoming to outsiders. If the influx of new people would seize to be, Oghmania would slowly die out. One thing that makes Oghmania different, is the surplus of empty houses specifically built to attract new people. Newcomers are offered these houses in exchange for signing a contract of service to the settlement. This allows the poorest people of making a decent living in Oghmania, which is a common occurance and could be seen as the "secret sauce" that makes Oghmania successful.

Vibe

The weather in Oghmania is unpredictable. Strong winds and the occasional blizzard make it an inhospitible place. As such, there are significant pressures to stay warm, greatly influencing the values and ideals that people have.

Fat

Those that live in Oghmania the longest have gained fat to protect them from the cold. Newcomers are encourages to eat extra to gain fat. They mostly eat whale and seal meat, which they can source locally. Pork and beef are expensive and are mostly only consumed during grand feasts.   As such, fat is a sign of longevity and success. Thin people are considered less attractive, because it's a sign they haven't proven themselves in the harsh environment and are more likely to die due to the cold or simply inexperience.

Structure

Newcomers to Oghmania are often surprised by how chaotic it is built. No house aligns with its neighboring houses. No path into town is straight. The village also has many tall, but narrow walls at many different angles, mostly at the edge. They are told this is an attempt to break up the wind, so when you walk through town, you're rarely walking against the powerful wind. Every wall and house is a form of windshield. Those who know Oghmania like the back of their hand sometimes walk the most creative routes through it, to greatly reduce the amount of wind they have to endure.   Most houses are built with locally sourced wood and then insolated with muck. A temple in the center of town is built out of stone and is a shelter during powerful storms. Throughout the settlement are small stone buildings full of firewood, ensuring that the people always have access to optimal kindling for the hearth.

Traditions

Expeditions

Upon the successful return of an expedition group, the people of Oghmania will organize a feast. This feast is meant to warm and feed those entrepid explorers and celebrate their achievement. Even if the expedition was ultimately a failure, their safe return is still an achievement all on its own, worth celebrating.

Weddings

Weddings in Oghmania are exceedingly rare. Getting married is mostly tied to traditions from outside of Oghmania. As such, most people that marry are pretty particular about the location and customs for their wedding. Those that do marry in Oghmania can expect a feast in their honor. The lack of priests can make it feel a bit lackluster or even unofficial.   The reason why so few weddings happen in the first place, is because it sets an artificial limit. Woman in Oghmania are rare as it is and they believe it's healthier for the population if they can bear children of different man.
