Ancient History
The doom of humanity originated in western Breyuan, when the Olmou monarchy rose to power. They were failing in a war against the nearby Henford Coalition when they discovered a great source of power. The monarchy lost many claiming this power, ensuring their defeat in the eyes of their enemies -- but no one realized it would turn the tables so drastically.
The Henford Coalition was ravaged after the titans were unleashed upon it, most of its people either turned into giant monsters or devoured by them.
At first, the Olmou monarchy ran amok with it's newfound power. They waged wars with and decimated the countries of Lecharia, Ashos, and many other smaller countries sharing the continent of Breyuan. But, after testing their newfound power on these countries, they became complacent. Leaving the countries alone that hurriedly allied themselves with the exponentially growing political power, they began enslaving the other countries around them. Unfortunately for the Olmou monarchy, this would be their eventual downfall.
After many years with little progress, the slaves and abolitionists joined as one force, and they waged war on the Olmou monarchy. This war was long and bloody, and saw many casualties, but former royal house members knew the monarchy's inner workings and weaknesses. With this knowledge, the Olmou monarchy was defeated, and the original power held by the ruler, name, shattered into weaker fragments.
Despite their great efforts to end this threat against humanity, the damage had already been done. Titans now ran amok across the world, and even with widespread campaigns against the beasts, they couldn't be thwarted. The survivors fled to the island of Shiochera, where there were substantially less titans, and built a fortified city there in order to protect the last of humanity.

When looking at the continental map of Attack on Titan, it's fairly obvious that it's just the world map flipped upside down ...
