The Ember-Slough

Government

There is no ruling government as such as the town is semi-nomadic and tends to move when ember soil reserves in particular areas have run dry or larger numbers of mold-folk or other creatures amass near the town. Despite this arbitration and general rule tends to fall to the Exchange Overseer who holds disproportionate power over denizens of Ember Slough due to him also being the pay-master for almost all who live there.

Industry & Trade

Ember-Sloughs Main export is Ember-Soil, a heat source that is transferred throughout most of Huldath. Little else is made within the swamps or the town that can be exported. Many Swampers however will joke that if misery and suffering were saleable commodities they would have the market cornered.

Infrastructure

Little in the way of permanent infrastructure exists within Ember-Slough, however, once all buildings have been moved, walkways between buildings to allow folks to walk on boardwalks rather than mud are placed.

Guilds and Factions

The Ember Soil Miners Exchange, an arm of the Illum Company, is the only represented guild within Ember Slough. Artisans who find themselves here are typically outside of the standard guild structure for their chosen craft, either ostracized, exiled or excommunicated from them.

Points of interest

Ember Soil Miners Exchange This building, at first glance, appears to be a well build stone structure wholly out of place within the Ember Soil Swamps and particularly so in Ember Slough. On closer inspection however, giant skids and places for many pack mules, Swampers and other beasts of burden can be seen hinting at its ability, albeit limited, to become mobile across the swamps.    The Muddy Fox / The Puddle & Pony The Muddy Fox and the Puddle & Pony are the typical, is somewhat muddier, tavern and stable house found up and down Huldath. Here food and ale are served to all. Many a Swamper has spent their life savings here.    Shrine to Corsega Corsega, God of life, creation, and living things, has a shrine that moves with the town when it makes its infrequent journeys across the swamps. Here druids, clerics and followers of the tenants of Corsega can find a brief respite from the biting insects as none will come within 20ft of the shrine. The devout leave simple offerings to Corsega here, coins, lighted candles, sweet-smelling flowers and other similar trinkets to curry the god's favor.      Scouts "Palace" a Misnomer if ever there was one, the palace is actually owned by the miners exchange and is a sort of crash house for Soil-Scouts between their forrays into the swamps. A dank, smelly and downright horrible place filled with mean whom ten baths would not clean.
"I saw then some scouts and following them was the stench of swamp, death and despair. Something remarkable happened too, the broken and downtrodden 'Swampers', as they are called, the men who mine ember soil, actually looked down further on these scouts. When I had first arrived I had thought surely I am looking now on the lowest rung of the social ladder, however, it seems that the only thing worse than being an Ember Soil Miner, is being an Ember Soil Scout" Ruthbert Kullick, Scholar of Craidd March's Library on his Census Expedition to Ember Slough
Swamp Things The general store of Ember Slough, unremarkable save the its abundance of mattocks, likely the most complete collection anywhere outside of a dwarven hold.      Sojourners Rest Sojourners Rest is the Camp where most Ember Soil miners live. As miners go on longer expeditions the camping area grows and shrinks.    The Abides The Abides, much like the miners exchange building, are mounted atop great wooden sleds that allow them to move. These typically house ember soil miners who have not drunk their pay and instead used their money to buy a more permanent home outside of Sojourner's rest. Typically 2 or 3 miners and their families will live in one house with them often being out on different expeditions by design, in order to reduce over-crowding. Mining Formen often make homes here also.      Gammidge's Farm Gammidge's Farm is unique in all of Huldath in that it has managed to breed and grow a type of root vegetable native to Ember Slough that is, taste not withstanding, edible. These Pock Tubers have a potato-like consistency and a dung like taste, or so it is said, with sufficient seasoning however they have quickly become the staple food for miners and scouts alike.
"Pock Tubers....we ate them today again...we ate them yesterday and I'm sure we will eat them again tomorrow. They are the only food in which i have partaken where i find more joy in the exiting of them from my body than from the entering." Unknown, Overhead conversation in the Muddy Fox

Tourism

It is often said the only thing that is stranger than someone going to Ember Slough to work, is someone going there to visit.

Architecture

There are two main types of structure in Ember Slough,  The mobile, such as tents, lean-to's and the like, and semi-mobile, such as the buildings found in the Abides or the Ember Soil Exchange.
