The Passage of Ring

A small innocent ring with a purple gem and the signet of the House of Acedia.   This ring is often associated with the authority that House of Acedia holds. The primordial raw black mana that the ring emanates cannot be forged, and the ring would be considered a high-level cursed object under normal circumstances. It is completely harmless, if donned by a member of the family. However, when worn by an outsider, the black mana quickly consumes the unfortunate soul, leaving behind only a heap of black ash with the ring resting on the top.   Tradition has it that the ring is given to the next successor.   Upon donning the ring, the ring measures its wielder. It rejects most, leaving a horrible scar behind from the taint of black mana . Usually the damage is not debilitating, only cosmetic. After this the ring either remains attached to them should there is no suitable candidate, remaining dormant. Or If there is a suitable candidate nearby, the ring will inflict pain upon it's bearer until it is removed.   When the ring does not have a bearer, it waits until a suitable Acedia is available. Afterwards, it will attempt to make contact with said member of the family. Once the subject wears the ring, the ring will measure the new wielder.   If the ring accepts the wielder, they are deemed worthy to take the Trial of Shadows, a sacred ritual created by Marianne. At this point the ring has already become permanently bound to the user and remain on their finger until their death. The ring greatly amplifies black mana in the user, and for users with a different affinity to mana it may even grant them the ability to use dark mana in addition to their original mana without the need of conversion.   While worn by a worthy individual, they can't remove the ring and they may always manifest the ring, even through gloves. Cutting a finger or losing a hand won't remove the ring either. Instead a spectral limb formed of shadows will replace the missing body part, wearing the ring. Often many generations go by until the ring finds a worthy bearer, out of which most have been women.   As such, the passage of the ring of shadows has become a forgotten tradition of the House of Acedia. No written records of it exist. If someone is accepted by the ring, they are destined to lead the House of Acedia in the future.
