Protection against the depths
For the indigenous Poro people and the fishermen and whalers around the great three lakes and the glacial sea, the protection of the depths has been an imperative ritual. Bone charms made from the bones of whales washed on the shores up north, sometimes mixed with the bones of the reindeer. It is a pagan tradition so old that no one has a record of when it had began.
Every house and boat in Dwyrsport carries these bone charms. The Poro people also carry these charms, although they are not seafaring. If asked directly, the reindeer herders will say that it is because of Ikutirsu, monster that lives in the three lakes. They say the three lakes are all connected.
The fishermen in Dwyrsport feel restless without the charm and losing one is considered an ill omen among the fishermen. Even by the shores of Lake Mare you can find calcified remnants of these charms. The ruined settlements near Lake Kelpie have several of these charms, and sometimes the charms are even carved on the rocks there.
While people in the south, near Crowald and onward don't believe in this superstition, few still travels further to explore without one. Afterall, what harm is there to take a little extra protection.
Be it whatever, the abandoned Lake Mare and Lake Kelpie feed into this superstition. Horrible things are said to have happened to those who neglected to take protection against the depths.
