Hops n Burn Tradition / Ritual in How to Live in a Fantasy World | World Anvil

Hops n Burn

Hops n Burn is an annual spring festival that takes place in Crowald. It celebrates the coming of spring and it is also a love festival meant for couples. Though everyone is allowed to participate.

Main activity

It is typically played among lovers or soon-to-be lovers. With the two taking roles of seeker and hider. In general the seeker is always a woman, however, there are always exceptions. After all it is only a tradition.   Between from the morning to noon, the men often go to local taverns and bars to drink and the seekers gather around and start searching. When found, the hiders are burned and need to stop drinking. Instead, they'll have to serve the seeker for the rest of the day and serve any drinks and requests made by them. These requests may include singing or dancing.   When the evening comes, these restrictions are usually lifted and everyone is drinking, dancing and singing together, celebrating the passage of winter and coming of spring.

Other Activities

The festival also has activities for those who are trying to find love. There are special tables in taverns and bars that are for singles. Anyone is allowed to seek a person sitting on the table. However, this only really happens for the really good looking ones and before afternoon. No one really wants to confess their love on a drunk.   When the evening comes, everyone in the city is carousing and drinking. With merry songs heard from all corners around the city, laughter fills the air. The celebrations last until late into the next morning. This event is commonly missed by tourists as the travel doesn't until later at the spring. Commonly it is a rare treat for those who decided to stay in Crowald over the winter.
