There are multiple ways that you can address introducing homebrew crafting components and materials into your game, each of which will provide your setting with a unique flavor.
Inherently Magical:
Each material type has an inherent, unique magical property.
Example: Crafting armor from the scales of a red dragon grants fire resistance.
Magic-Susceptible:
Only certain, (typically) rare materials can be infused with magic.
Example: Iron and steel weapons cannot be enchanted with magic, but weapons made from elder heartwood or arcanite metal can be.
Magic-Amplifying: (aka Morrowind Crafting)
Increasingly rare and valuable materials amplify magical enchantment.
Example: A silver ring can be enchanted to cast a 2nd-level spell, but a platinum ring encrusted in emeralds can cast a 5th-level spell.
