Sanctuary ~ The Capital City
Demographics
The Capital city of Santuary is the melting pot of the world of Edri. It's people are from every kingdom in the known world, and many cultures mingle peacefully among its broad courtyards and busy streets.
Government
The ruling government of Sanctuary is the Council of the Enlightened, as its base of operations is housed within its borders. The day to day operations are however overseen by a local governor named Almon Terron.
Defences
Sanctuary has for many hundreds of years housed the Council of the Enlightened, and with it the Order of the Knights of St. Kitt. This order of knights is composed of the best of the best, warriors from all 8 kingdoms, honor bound to protect the Council of the Enlightened at all costs. Sanctuary has, in reality, a small army of elite soldiers guarding its borders.
Industry & Trade
As the center of the worlds trade, Sanctuary's economy is one of the best examples of how peaceful intermingling among the kingdoms can benefit all. Traders and craftsman from all corners of Edri call Sanctuary home, and the wealth that is passed back and forth is the economic lifeblood of the world.
Infrastructure
Sanctuary prides itself on its courtyards, cobble streets, white marble buildings, and its modern rustic architecture. Its streets are kept clean, and its buildings are painstakingly well maintained by their owners. Its shipyards are known to house the best customs department in the land.
Assets
Housed within the borders of Sanctuary are small warehouses containing valuables of trade from all across the world of Edri. Glass from Ember, Fruits and Vegetables from Harvest, Gems from Vellenthian, Herbs and Medicines from Evergreen. The world trades within the markets of Sanctuary, under the watchful eye of the Council of the Enlightened, and the Knights of St. Kitt.
Guilds and Factions
There are many Guilds and Factions within the borders of Sanctuary, some as small as only a dozen members, such as the Guild of Flowers, a small flower viewing guild. Others are more elaborate and consist of several hundred members, such as the Ship Masters and Customs Guild.
Important Guilds of Sanctuary;
The Ship masters and Customs Guild; a guild consisting of several dozen members, the Ship masters and Customs Guild control, maintain, and process all incoming ships wanting to use the Sanctuary Port. The Ship Masters control the arrival and embarking of the ships, using a color coding system within large towers along the docks. Each tower has a Tower Master who's job is to switch out large glass windows of varying colors to let ships know which docks are available for landing, which are currently occupied, etc. This also allows ships access to the port at night.
The Guild of Eternal Trade;
The Guild of Eternal Trade is composed of accountants, brokers, investors, and company owners. If the trade of Sanctuary is the life blood of Edri's economy, then the Guild of Eternal Trade is the heart and veins. No legal trade passes through the kingdoms without the Guilds infinity stamp.
The Knights of St Kitt:
Formed shortly after the creation of the Council of the Enlightened, following the First Dragon War. The Knights of St Kitt were begun by their namesake Valtonius Kitt, a freelance warrior who defended the company of heroes who would become the first Council. Since its founding, the best of the best warriors, archers, and mages of Edri have sought to join its ranks.
History
Sanctuary's history is a tale of blood, tears, and hope. The city itself began when The Architect (The architect at the time) received a vision of a grand white tower to house the newly formed Council of the Enlightened. With such an important group calling the tower home, it was only a matter of time before the city became the center of the world. The city itself has been invaded on multiple occassions over the millennia. But each invasion was met with expert defenses led by the Knights of St Kitt, and the Tower of the Enlightnlened has never been infiltrated by any army. Sanctuary also houses what is called simply The Library. A large library controlled by a very secretive group known as 'The Listeners'. Its history can be traced back to the early days of the 2nd Era, during the construction of the city of Sanctuary in the old world.
Architecture
Sanctuary houses several styles of architecture, yet seems to flow together to create it's own style, often called 'Capital Architecture'. Its homes tend to be of rustic style, yet are influenced by the greater structures of the city, including the Tower of the Enlightened, and the fort of the Knights of St Kitt. Courtyards dot the kingdoms roads as well, well maintained, and appearing around almost every corner. The people of Sanctuary are very peculiar about courtyards, and consider them to be an important public space that many ceremonies can be often seen in progress.
Geography
Sitting aside the Ocean and just outside of a massive desert, Sanctuary has a constant warm breeze brought on by the wind blowing from the sea. To the north is an icey forest of spruce pines, and beyond those is a wasteland tundra.
Natural Resources
Sanctuary being the trading capital of the world has not much need of it's own natural resources. Yet small farms, and clay mines dot the coast, bringing in a small bit of coin, and food to the city. Deep within the ground diamonds shimmer in torchlight, yet in rarity. The largest cache of which being owned by a Mr. Gatt, of Vellenthian.
