Moon Rabbit

Moon Rabbits are sentient rabbits that live on the moon.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Rumors claim that the meat of a moon rabbit has medicinal properties because of the species' long history of exposure to various herbs and alchemical agents. However, few have been daring (and evil) enough to act upon these rumors.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Herbalism and Alchemy

Herbalism is the biggest part of moon rabbit culture, and practically every moon rabbit is expected to study it. Core practices revolve around the use of a mortar and pestle to grind herbs into powder or paste before being used for medicine.   By extension, alchemy is also studied by moon rabbits, but usually only in relation to their herbalism practices. Some delve deeper into other aspects of alchemy, but most are pressured into not getting too distracted from their herbalism studies.

Mochi

Mochi () are sticky rice cakes that are extremely popular amongst moon rabbits. They also proudly flaunt their reputation of making the best mochi.

History

Pre-Hogoku History

In their original plane, moon rabbits spent generations working as alchemists and herbalists on the moon made of the same stone as the islands of Getsuhon Archipelago.   Moon rabbits would often travel down to Getsuhon to collect herbs and other supplies for their craft, and as their population on the moon grew, some moved back to Getsuhon permanently, living in secrecy in various forests.   The few inhabitants of Getsuhon that discovered the moon rabbits' existence would sometimes commission their services, but the prices demanded by a species used to serving gods were not cheap.

Hogoku History

Moon rabbits of Getsuhon were one of the first to realize the islands had moved to an entirely different plane since they could no longer contact their kin on the moon.

This article was made as a submission for a WorldAnvil Summer Camp 2018 prompt: "Describe a species in your world used for medicinal purposes."   (This entry might be a bit of a stretch, but hey, I like pretending to be clever.)
