Personal history
Mathilda was given up by her parents for unknown reasons, leaving her in an orphanage. Neglected by the overworked staff, Mathilda spent most time by herself. She taught herself how to read and soon consumed every book, newspaper, and even random notes or files—though she never let anyone know she looked at the latter. She eventually started sneaking out to steal books from the library or bookstore.
By age 14, still living in the orphanage and believing no one would want to adopt a teenager, Mathilda ran away to a nearby port town. Unable to find enough work to survive, she turned to thievery, though mostly just stealing basic necessities and literature.
Two years later, she was able to convince a small sky pirate crew to let her join by merit of her skills as a thief and her literacy.
After almost a year as a pirate, during one raid, Mathilda found documents that mentioned a wealthy merchant vessel that was traveling almost completely unguarded, and her crew immediately moved to intercept it. However, it had hired a few escort ships to guard it by the time the pirate crew found it, and Mathilda's crew assumed she had mislead them. She barely convinced them to simply kick her off the ship instead of killing her.
Stranded on an unknown island, the 17-year-old Mathilda scraped by stealing until she luckily found out a local noble was looking to hire sailors for an exploration ship. When the noble, Lord Dolce Gabbana, interviewed her, he questioned if her parents would be okay with her traveling, and she revealed she was an orphan. The eccentric lord hired her on the spot and adopted her.
