The ferret baptism

Among seafarers of the Svajan Sea, and in particular among the pirates, it is common to baptize a new ship as "The Ferret" after it is assigned a provisory crew and for at least as long as its first voyage is completed.   This custom is a reflection of the important roles Varil ferrets have in keeping the safety of the ships in navigation in the Svajan waters thanks to their control over the population of ropeater rodents.   Every time a new ship is acquired by a pirate crew, it is tradition for the Captain of the raiding ship to dispatch a portion of the crew and one of its officers (usually the Quartermaster) to man the new ship.   In this circumstances, the crew of the new ship is by necessity incomplete and often lacks a ferret for protection from the ropeaters. For this reason, the new ship is named "the Ferret" as the name is believed to grant it some sort of protection until it can reach a safe port to acquire a real ferret and complete the ranks of the crew.   This is usually a provisory measure and after a proper crew can be completed the ships usually change names at the same time as a new Captain is elected.   Some Captains and crews, in particular among those who are on a specific mission or that consider their position particularly precarious, prefer to keep the name "the Ferret" long term or at least until their percieved mission is successfully complete, as the supposed good luck of the name extends not only to the protection from the ropeaters, but protection from Abyssal Lures and in general safe and smooth navigation.
