Record of the names

The tracking of the ancestors through which they are linked to their dragon's progenitor is a fundamental part of makarids' cultural identity. Many forms of art and crafts are used to keep the record of the names of the clan's ancestors, often unique to each clan.   Every makarid is expected to know by heart and possess a recorded form of their lineage at least up to their most recent dragon ancestor. This geneologic trees take different forms for different clans. Some simply record the names on paper in elaborately bound and miniated books. Other clans embroider them in tapestry or weave them in carpets and blankets. Other carve them in the wood of walking sticks or in metal tags attached to the links of a chain.   Some clans even combined the common habit of decorating their bodies with tattoos with this form of record keeping and inscribe the genealogic tree directly on their skin, following the pattern of their natural markings.   One of the biggest honours for a makarid is that of being included in the geneologic tree of the clan. This usually happens after their first child reaches the adult life.   In the event is involved the whole community and it is an occasion to celebrate both the parent (or parents) and the child with two distinct but linked ceremonies.   The first part of the evening usually involves a gathering to assist to the final touch of the artisan that was tasked to craft the new genealogic tree for the coming of age of the young makarid.   Wherever possible, the members of the clan form a circle around the artisan while they finish to inscribe the new name on the item in the presence of the parent and the child. Once finished they will announce that the new name has been added to the record and the whole clan recites the new list of names, including the new one.   After this the item will be presented to the young makarid and the coming of age part of the celebrations will commence.   More often than not, after both rituals have been concluded, the celebrated ones gather their own group of friends and lovers to carry on with the party under the supervision of a one or several Izar and Miyiks long into the night and often for the following day as well.
