Himmelheim

The story takes place on the world of Arigo, a continental world much like Earth. Arigo is a unique world in that it experiences a strange phenomenon known as the Flare. The Flare manifests in the form of surges of magic. Magic comes and goes on Arigo, seemingly randomly. People whose minds are attuned to the Flare receive special powers during the Surges. Powers that they lose when the Surge ends.   The Surges also open portals to other dimensions. Many of the stranger lifeforms found on Arigo arrived during a Surge. Due to the unreliability of magic, the people of Arigo have developed advanced technology. The skies above Arigo team with aircraft, factories produce goods at alarming rates and the time of magic is almost forgotten. In the wake of Arigo’s industrial revolution another Surge could be coming.   Arigo is recovering from a war. The Skyborn, bands of air pirates and brigands, unified under the leadership of Haesteinn Wartooth, known by “groundwalkers” as Haesteinn the Despoiler. Haesteinn captained the Grand Leviathan, the largest airship yet seen. Where or how he obtained the ship remains a mystery. With it he was able to lay waste to entire cities. An alliance of the most powerful nations in the world managed to just barely defeat Haesteinn. The war is generally considered to have ended at the Battle of Himmelheim, when the heroic Arvernian admiral, Torix MacClanahan rammed his ship into the Grand Leviathan and both ships disappeared in a fiery inferno.   It has been 10 years since the Great War, and the nations of Arigo are slowly recovering. But Haesteinn may have only been the beginning.
