The Eel

Purpose / Function

Provide dock-rats a place to be nefarious, fleece everyone else. Ostensibly an inn. May be sentient. If you ask the wrong people in Byriver, they will say this is the cheapest inn. They are wrong.

Architecture

The Tap Room

An n-gon shaped room where n represents shadowy corners and is equal to current number of edgelords plus one. If you are very observant, you can watch reality ripple whenever a grizzled, silent, mysterious stranger enters the tap room in order to provide an additional corner for them to lurk in. Dimly lit, with cobwebby rafters, a small and smoky fireplace at the west end, battered veteran tables, chairs, and stools, and a long bar counter where the lamplight pools and stains the surfaces and patrons like spilled beer.

The Sleeping Rooms

Bare and creaky board floors, smoke yellowed paper peeling from the walls, equipped with a small iron stove for heating (coal extra), a very dubious bed that should probably be both disinfected and deloused before use, two rickety wooden chairs, and an equally rickety table. There is a lock for both the door and the chest at the foot of the bed, but use your own and make sure it can't be picked with a hairpin. Better yet, be a light sleeper and someone it would be suicidal to rob.

Tourism

The Food

There are two menus: the one you want and the one you don't. The one you don't is the one the innkeeper will tell you about if you're new and not a riverman. It sounds good. It sounds fancy. It is neither, and like all restaurant specials, it uses things that are about to go off. The one you want is the one you get if you and the innkeeper have reached that special place in your relationship where you can slide onto a stool and grunt "food" somewhat audibly. You will get fresh fish, or crayfish, or eel, grilled and salted to perfection, haggled from the morning's catch. You will get the good bread. You will get house-made pickles. You will get chili oil for all of it. You will not need cutlery.
