Shadebearer Division

Shadebearer is the lowest division or the order. With a number of 5 000 men, women and others. It does, however, not justly represent the competence of the individuals it consists of. Most of the people working as Shadebearers do so for personal reasons and specifically, by choice. They might like the freedom it grants.

Duties

Shadebearers mainly function as personal protection for people with enough coin to contract them. They do not take payments themselves however. Instead, they get compensation for their personal expenses from the Order and leave all dealings with money and payments to the Order.

Hierarchy

Internally, the Shadebearers consist of two active operations classes. They are run by the administrators of the non-combat side of the order.   Day's Respite Division 1st Class - "Administrator" One assigned per region, handles large scope, long-time organization of the forces. Reports back directly to the Primus Umbra.   Day's Respite Division 2nd Class - "Supervisor", One assigned per district, responsible for keeping and aquiring client relations. Reports back to their 1st Class supervisors.   Day's Respite Division 3rd Class - "Handler", One assigned per operative/group of operatives. Keeping track of day-to-day business. Grants or denies any and all requests for economic support from operatives within the scope of their respective mission. Reports back to their 2nd Class Supervisor.   Shadebearer 1st Class - Operative cleared for active duty with the esteemed families of the Expanse and benefactors of the Order. Reports to their Handler   Shadebearer 2nd Class - Operative cleared for active duty with the general population and with local entrepreneurs. Reports to their Handler.

Requirements

In order to become a Shadebearer, you need to be able to complete the basic training and the SCT. On top of that you must be able to show enough devotion and discipline during the active duty section of the bootcamp to be trusted to work alone. Alternatively having been raised in one of the Order-run orphanages.

Recruitment

There are many ways in to the forces of the Order of the Night Queen, below are the two most common.
  • Through the local churches of Novon. Families who wish to pay tribute to Novon would volunteer their adult children to serve as members of the Evening's Tide.
  • Through one the many Order-run orphanages where unfit, sickly or otherwise situated parents can get their child a religious education and food and shelter for the rest of their life. When reaching sufficient maturity, the children will undergo a drafting process where the fittest ones are given the choice of joining the Fast track to joining the forces as a paladin or cleric.
  • Through the special Novonite boarding school program. Where wealthy families would send their children to get a high class education as well as an opportunity to attend the Fast track as a paladin or cleric recruit.

Drafting

The drafting process consists of a written and oral exam. As well as a medical exam. This is mainly to determine your fill the requirements for basic cognitive function and to assess your knowledge about practicing Novonism. It also consists of a magic aptitude test, where it's determined if you have the potential of being a cleric or paladin.

Fast track

If you've already undergone extensive religious training from for instance an orphanage, a Novonite boarding school or a monastery you have a chance to join the fast track. This basically means you get to skip the first eight weeks of the basic training and instead get extra weapons training and further religious and magic education. As it is likely that you'll wanna end up in a higher division than Evening's Tide which only requires you to be proficient with one type of martial weapon and is generally assisted by priests or clerics from the regular local churches.

Basic training

Orientation (week 1)

The first part of basic training takes place in either Tabernaclas or the Layer of Earth in Baran'Thal and consists of two weeks of psychological testing, resistance training towards low level mind-altering magic and non-magical techniques. As well as interrogation tactics and defenses. Along with an orientation of all the basic facilities within the barracks.

Patrol (weeks 2-4)

The second part of basic training mainly consists of team building exercises along with martial weapons training and obstacle courses. You'll be tasked with leading and following a group of five through the various obstacle courses.

Defense (weeks 5-7)

In the third part of basic training, the recruits are trained in basic protocol around protecting different types of structures. Be it watchtowers, walls, prisons or simple watchposts. As well as continuing their physical training and martial weapons training.

Investigation (weeks 8-9)

In the fourth part of basic training, the recruits are trained in basic investigation tactics and protocol as well as how to best assist a Star Runner investigation. They are also trained in how to discern what markers they should look out for when attempting to decide if a person is part of a protected division. Protected divisions could be undercover work, internal review or internal affairs agents.

Catch-Up and amends (weeks 10-15)

In the fifth part of the basic training, the recruits are presented with their current score and aptitude evaluations. They are also presented with the option of attempting to improve or amend any of their scores to get entry in to a higher division.   This is also a period where active duty order members may try out for a higher division.   For the fast track students this is six weeks of intensive martial weapons training.   The minimum physical standards for qualifying for further training are. The recruit must be:
  • Able to make a 500 yard swim within 15 minutes.
  • Able to perform 50 pushups within 2 minutes.
  • Able to perform 50 situps within 2 minutes.
  • Able to perform at least 10 pull-ups (no time limit)
  • Able to complete a 1,5 mile Timed Run within 11 minutes.

Field Training (weeks 16-25)

In the sixth part of the basic training, the recruits have to perform a ten week active duty as an Evening's Tide city guard in either the Layer of Shade in Baran'Thal, the Rafters of Middlesuss or the Slums of Mera Cleia. After this, recruits are free to join the Evening's Tide and be assigned a city, town or village to attend to. Beyond this part of the training, only recruits aspiring to advance further continue.

SCT (weeks 26-28)

The seventh and last part of basic training is basically an introduction course for advanced training. It will grant you access to applying for the Star Runner or Dawnchaser Divisions. SCT stands for siege, capture and torture training. This entails three weeks of solitary hostile environment training and advanced resistance to torture training. You will be placed in the middle of a hostile environment. A desert, a forest and a swamp and forced to fend for yourself without food or water for three days at a time. At the end of each three day-trial you are exposed to extensive and rigorous physical and magical torture and interrogation techniques.

Advancement

Fast Track

If you have completed the Basic Training as a member of the Fast Track program, you skip the initial four weeks of bootcamp of the Advanced Training program and move on to the later courses. Mainly focusing on your paladin or cleric training.

Assessment (week 1)

The first part of the advanced training mainly consists of physical testing and score evaluation. If you have five years veterancy, you are able to ascent to ranks 3-4 of the Star Runner Division without passing the minimum physical requirements for further training. Given that your merits during active duty are sufficient.   The minimum physical standards for qualifying for the Elite Training program are as follows: The recruit must be:
  • Able to make a 500 yard swim within 8 minutes.
  • Able to perform 80 pushups within 2 minutes.
  • Able to perform 80 situps within 2 minutes.
  • Able to perform at least 15 pull-ups (no time limit)

In the fourth part of advanced training, the recruits are trained in advanced investigation tactics and interrogation methods, as well as methods in manning institutions built to contain high-level magic users.

Advanced Field Training (weeks 13-22)

In the fifth part of advanced training, the recruits have to perform a ten week active duty as Star Runner mounted guardsmen in the Layer of Shade in Baran'Thal. After this, recruits are free to join the Star Runner Division as Assistant Sergeants.

Advanced SCT (weeks 23-34)

The sixth and last part of advanced training is the introduction to the Elite Training Program.SCT stands for siege, capture and torture training. It entails one week of total sensory deprivated confinement and starvation. After which you practice advanced magical and non-magical torture techniques on your each other. The final ten weeks are spent training in how to siege and enter highly defensible structures and positions and capture high-value targets.

Elite Training (weeks 1-25)

Contrary to the Basic and Advanced Training Programs. The Elite training program does not escalate in difficulty. It merely remains at the same difficulty as the Advanced Training Program while also teaching the recruits things such as high-society manor and etiquette. It contains a proper speaking and writing course. All courses are taught in parallel. It also enters you in to the way of the paladin or cleric if you are not already initiated. For to truly be an elite guard is to be virtuous and attuned to magic and to Novon.

Fast Track

For recruits who finished the Basic and Advanced Training Fast Track program. Elite Training is mainly about further honing your skill with martial weapons and maintaining the high standard of manors and etiquette already taught to you by the orphanages and/or boarding schools. It also furthers your spiritual and magical training as a paladin.

Loyalty Training

The loyalty training is an ongoing course where you are introduced to a horse you have to care for, the entire course. It will then be your companion for as long as it lives.
