Usilian Imperial Army
The Shogun's military force is one of the most disciplined and rigorous in the known world. Those that pursue a military career in Usilia begin their training at a very young age, some starting as low as 12 years of age, though this is uncommon and mostly seen with families with considerable riches, like Lords or High Lords. Sons of lowly families tend to start their military training on the year that they come of age: their 100th anniversary for elves and 20th anniversary for Halflings.

Military Branches
The Shogun's Army is powerful but the Shogun expects each each High Lord and Lord to handle the security of their lands. Most of the Army helps protect one of the main cities and the borders while the Navy tries to keep the trade routes secure. Standing above all of the branches are the Sword Saints, an elite group of Usilian warriors that report directly to the Shogun whose fearful reputation precedes them.Sword Saints
Despite their name, not all of the Saints wield swords, though all of them are known for having legendary combat expertise with specific weapons. Each Saint represents the epitome of martial prowess in Usilia and when one is dispatched to a location, their enemies tend to disappear.Imperial Army
The Imperial Army helps defend the major cities of Usilia and is occasionally dispatched to settle disputes among Lords or High Lords. The largest concentration of soldiers can be found in Ruby Fields with smaller dispatches found in the Great Marches, Quick River and Travel's End. Each major city tends to have some representative of the Shogun among them but generally only the larger cities actually Usilian soldiers. The rest of the areas rely upon the Lords and High Lord's for security.Imperial Navy
The Usilian Navy force operates from Cape Hope, a fortress-city whose residents are exclusively Navy Officers or direct family members. The main duty is to patrol and secure the Usilian Coast and to defend the trade routes from pirates which are plentiful, daring and some are so nefarious whose reputation precedes them.
Academies
To gain hist first military rank a student must first graduate from a Military Academy, with his final grade determining his starting rank and what branches of the army he can join, some being more demanding than others.
There are various military academies throughout Usilia, each specializing in specific combat styles and disciplines that can grant them access to different military branches. There are four noteworthy academies throughout Usilia:
- Red Dragon Military Academy - this elusive academy, located within Ruby Fields is rumored to teach the strongest and most powerful fighting styles in the land. Entry in this academy varies from all the others in Usilia, for only the very best students may apply. Every year the Shogun holds a large tournament in the capital among the best students of each of the schools and the winners of such tournaments are awarded with a prize and an invitation to apply. Outside of winning that tournament, a student can only enter the academy through a recommendation letter from a highly ranked military officer. The fighting styles are said to be based on the styles of some of the famed Sword Saints and once a year, the best students in the Academy earn the right to face one of them in combat.
- Quick River Academy (also known as the Water Dancers Academy) - This school is well known its fluid fighting style that has graceful yet deadly movements. Revered by some, despised by others, this fighting style is distinguished among all others in Usilia for its movements almost feel like a dance, so much so that certain theater companies incorporate their movements into their stage-plays.
- Piercing Heaven Academy - this academy was formed and led by Halflings and is based on the fighting style of their ancestors. Halflings are naturally adept at using spears and javelins and their fighting style has helped developed improve fighting styles for larger weapons like pikes and lances.
- Cape Hope Naval Academy - To deal with the growing threat and influence of pirates on the Usilian Coast the Shogun called upon his best naval officers to train a new generation of navy men and women who can fight in land as well as in the open seas. This school is known for having some of the harshest training regiments as students are required to swim for hours with all of their equipment and are required to spend as much time training as they are learning naval warfare. No student can graduate from the Naval Academy without having the ability to steer a ship or being able to fight under water.
