The Dökk Vængur (Dark Wings)
The Dökk Vængur, or Dark Wings, are the elite cavalry unit held by Jarl Torsteinnn. When Torsteinn created this cavalry unit it was seen as unusual within the Shieldite populace, warriors fight on their feet, on level footing, not from horseback. Torsteinn had been influenced by his friends from the Wetlands and taking into account their advice, created the first Shieldite Cavalry unit. Inspired by one of the creatures that plagues the night along the Wetlands border, The Dark Wings attach black metallic wings to their saddles so that when they ride, those wings flap and the combined noise sounds like the flapping of a dragons wings, sending fear into the heart of those they charge.
Torsteinn placed a friend in charge, one from the Wetlands, Garth Taylor, a trained fighter and skilled rider. His appointment caused a lot of dissent amongst the Shieldite warriors, especially those that were ordered to join the unit. The appointment stirred up more hate between the various faction within Torsteinn's lands, Priests of the Watcher claiming divine providence that Garth was chosen, Shieldite Priests claiming the gods will strike Garth down for no outsider can lead a force within the gods chosen land. Recently Garth has been struck with an illness and the factions are watching with bated breath for his survival (or death) could either make or break their hold on the Jarldom.
