Sarama

In Helstavite folk lore, the Sarama is a mythological being referred to as the guardian of the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead. It guides travellers at night onto the right path, and guards them from danger. It also protects ground it considers sacred from those who would profane and commit sacrilege on it. Some scripture goes as far as to describe the Sarama as the divine protectors of Helstav.   In pre-Valtyvian times, it had been the custom to bury a dog alive under the cornerstone of a church as a foundation sacrifice so that its ghost might serve as a guardian, although it was outlawed under Emperor Valtyv.

Legacy

The canine species Sarama, native to Helstav, is named after the mythological Sarama dogs. The species originated from the Skybreakers dividing Grecia and Helstav, and had been tamed around 4000 BR.   Some people reported seeing wraith-like dogs patrolling the fields around Helstav, although they rarely venture onto the roads. Establishing the existence of such wraith-like dogs has proven futile, however.
