Octant 5: The Steel

In charge of smithing, leatherworking, glasswork and all kinds of product design and manufacturing, the fifth Octant is where a variety of products and items are crafted to then be sold in The Money Octant, to then be used by any and all.

Demographics

35% Humans, 30% Halflings, 15% Elves, 10% Half-Elves, 5% Gnomes, 5% other. This is where many Half-Elves are born.

Government

The Steel Caucus is the governing body of the Steel Octant. There's 75 seats that are elected every three years. There's no clear leader in the Caucus, but there are several political parties, and the leader of the party with the most votes is currently Sobrik Forgeslapped, son and heir of Amrik Forgeslapped. The three largest political parties are, in descending order: Modern Working Class Coalition (led by Forgeslapped), Contemporary Citizens Movement, and Industrial Justice Union.

Ruler

The Forgeslapped family has historically been very involved in the inner workings of the Steel Octant, and owns the largest weapons factory in the Octant. They have a long-standing alliance with the Pebblepounder family in the 4th Octant, occasionally helping each other out. The head of the family is Amrik Forgeslapped.

Infrastructure

All sorts of things are produced in the Steel Octant: Beer, furniture, clothes, weapons, to only mention a few. Very few have mastered the art of making arcane foci, made primarily for the Study Octant. Apart from that, there are brothels, pit-fighting rings, blacksmithies, armories, clothiers, jewelry makers, welders, repairmen, taverns, inns, leatherworkers, glassworkers, and many more servicepeople.

Guilds and Factions

The living conditions here are little better than in the Stone Octant, but people usually take comfort in the fact that they don't live in the Stone Octant if they've hit hard times. There are several clashing parties here, as the people here are almost as varied as the Money Octant, which has caused many clashes in culture and status both. This is the third most, and certainly most unexpectedly, political Octant, just after the Centre and Money Octants, with the politics of the Caucus extending far beyond just the building and laws themselves.

History

The Steel Octant grew into existence as the Money Octant did, in a strange symbiosis, but where the Money Octant reaped all the benefits of selling merchandise, the Steel Octant fell quickly behind in terms of monetary status. Today, it is both one of the poorest and one of the least maintained Octants in Helstav.

Architecture

The Steel Octant is, much like the Stone Octant, made up of simple and practical buildings, with many large buildings featuring warehouses and factories producing merchandise for the Money Octant. The distinguishing characteristic that differs the Steel Octant from the Stone Octant is the fact that while the Stone Octant's architecture is mainly Dwarven in origin, the architecture in the Steel Octant is a mix of Human and Halfling-designed, with some Elven residues from the early days of Helstav's history.
