Octant 4: The Stone

The fourth Octant of Helstav is known as the Stone Octant. The Octant is in charge of the heavy industry and construction for the city. All major repairs within the city is handled by the strong and sturdy Dwarves that are based within The Stone.

Demographics

55% Dwarves, 20% Humans, 10% Halflings, 5% Elves, 5% Duergar, 5% others.

Government

The Stone Cabinet is the governing body of the Stone Octant. It's comprised of more important individuals in the Octant, with 25 seats being elected every four years and another 25 also being elected every four years, with a two-year interval between the election. Every five years, there's also an election for the Head of the Stone Chamber, though the position has almost always been held by a Pebblepounder.

Ruler

Kharrik Pebblepounder is the undisputed leader of the largest faction in the Stone Octant, and the owner of the largest construction & production of building materials company The Pounding Pebbles. He is working closely with the Forgeslapped family in the Steel Octant, and with Amrik Forgeslapped in particular.

Infrastructure

The Stone Octant is one big construction site. It's a dangerous place to be in, moreso if you don't know how to handle yourself, for the simple reason that things can go wrong and you can be crushed by falling building material. This is where the poorest people can generally be found, since there's a lot of work to be done, for low wages.

Guilds and Factions

One would think that such a competitive environment would have created a cutthroat business where people climb over each other for every last copper piece, but the people of the Stone Octant have long ago reached an agreement where they demand a minimum wage that's a living wage. It's not a good living wage, but one will survive, and yes, the companies could let everyone go and hire new people, but that would cost more money and more competent people than they can afford to sacrifice.   That does not, however, mean that everything is perfect. Due to the relative extreme poverty of the Stone Octant compared to the rest of Helstav, crime is rampant here, with many people seeing it as the only way to earn money and resorting to it even if they hadn't intended to.

History

The Stone Octant was was created when people who were in charge of constructing Helstav came together and started living in their own area. The Octant itself is fairly new in comparison to the other Octants, but its predecessor had been around for longer than almost all Octants, the Garden excluded.

Architecture

The buildings are made in a simple style, and the majority are of Dwarven origin. They are densely packed together. A lot of houses look like they've seen better days.
