Great March
The former capital of Usilia takes it name from being the location from which the Shogun first amassed his forces and began his march to conquer all of Usilia. Despite having fallen into hard times during the construction of Ruby Fields, the city has seen a resurgence in the latest centuries thanks to the ingenuity of its halfling leaders who were able to turn the marshes that surround it into immense rice plantations. Since then, rice has become a staple of Usilia's culinary due to its abundance and affordable price and Great March was able to prosper once more.
Demographics
Most of the inhabitants of the Great March are Halflings. After the capital moved to Ruby Fields most of the talented Elven craftsmen and their businesses moved along with it. In their absence the halfling population grew as the city began to prosper.
Government
The city is governed by a High Lord Halfling and it is the only city in Usilia that has a democratically-elected leader who appoints a council to oversee various matters and needs of the city.
History
The Great March was founded by elves many years ago and was for many centuries the largest settlement in all of Usilia. Though the land was divided into many independent holdings ruled by Lords, whoever held the Great March had more political sway than the others, so the seat, and who held it was a contested topic that led to many skirmishes between Lords until the day the Shogun took power, manage to amass enough support to start moving through the land and uniting all of the lands under one rule.
After Usilia was united and Ruby Fields' construction was well on its way, the Shogun moved to a large Pagoda at the top of the plateau, leaving the Great March to slowly wane and die without any real leadership and with all of its economy moving to the new capital. When the new capital was nearing completion and Quick March held little value, the Shogun decided to offer it to the Halflings who, up until that point, didn't have any seat of power or Lordship in the land.
While officially the offer of the former seat of power to the Halflings might seem like an immense gift the reality at the time was that the city had very few future prospects and was falling into decay. After the Shogun united the lands and named himself the exclusive deity of Usilia, the once prosperous lands and forests and planes that surrounded Great March withered, becoming marches and the forests now riddled with dangerous creatures. Despite this the halflings gladly took the gift and used their ingenuity and business acumen to cultivate rice in the marshes and within a few decades became the largest exporters of Usilia's most consumed food.
To this day the Great March remains the only city with a Halfling High Lord and also the only city with a democratically-elected Leader.
Architecture
The City consists of various districts surrounded by houses with the inner ones being surrounded by broad walls with interior corridors from which archers could shoot upon invaders. Originally the city existed on top of a small plateau but as the marshes rose and some of the lower parts of the city sunk it was adapted, with some of the walls becoming barriers to prevent other parts from sinking and bridges uniting the districts together.
The architecture is typical Usilian with wood being used for most constructions outside of the fortifications and the interior keep is a broad pagoda from which one can oversee the land for a very long distance.
Geography
The city is located between the warm-looking and peaceful forests that surround Ruby Fields and a river and marshes that have made most of the land to the east near-inhospitable, though the halflings turned the once despised lands into vast and very profitable rice fields.
To the southwest of the city you find the mountains that separate Usilia from Metrus making the sun set on the Great March faster than other cities.
