Iliakontos

Buried in the sand and rock below the eastern Kinnabari Cliffs, the Iliakontos, or Sun Lance, was discovered by Makadelian Archaeologists. Resembling a long and unusually shaped  brass staff with a flanged tip, this is the first evidence of Sovranese alchemical weaponry, a weapon unlike anything seen elsewhere in Makadelos save for a superficial resemblance to firearms. It was likely used as part of an invasion force intending on subjugating Lukhora long before the collapse of Sovrano, though it is unknown if it is a truly unique artifact or if it was used in larger numbers by the Sovranese Military, as only one has been found so far.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

A strikingly simple design, the Iliakontos is a brass shell surrounding an inner core of electrum with a currently unknown glass-like material separating the two, likely meant to better channel the user's Pneuma into the electrum. Much of the workings of the device are fairly simple, as it's designed to work off the user's own alchemical abilities rather than creating its own effect, meaning that it can't be used by just anyone. When used, it projects a missile of light in the direction of the flanged end, similar to a bullet leaving a gun.

History

It is likely that the Iliakontos was involved in an attempted sea invasion into Lukhora sometime around 400-300 A.L., which was likely repelled in some way by the native inhabitants. Since then, it has sat below the rocks and sand until 1789 when it was discovered by an Archaeological expedition along the beaches. It was immediately sent to the Sovrano Archeio to be stored and studied, where it remains to this day.

Significance

The Heliokontos is the first dedicated alchemical weapon of Sovranese origin discovered. While other artifacts are predicted to have been able to be used as a weapon, they also had other uses that were more obvious. As of now, there are no other apparent uses for the Heliokontos, and it was found on an ancient battlefield, lending to the theory that it was a type of weapon used by the ancient Sovranese.
