Ocharia

Ocharia
Ocharia is a city located along the mouth of Peresh River as it flows into the Malseka Gulf in southeastern Malnova. With an estimated population of about 170,000, it is the most populous city of Silverveil, as well as the 4th most populous city of Malnova. A major port, Ocharia is considered an economic and commercial hub for the broader southeast region of Malnova.   Real world example; New Orleans

Demographics

The majority of the population of Ocharia is human. However, the city is exceptionally diverse in the races that call it home, and all major race groups, includes Hellenics, can be found within its walls.

Government

Ocharia is ran by an system of earldom, with a royal earl administering the city. There is no election process within the city, and while the earl appoints several advisors to help him with his decisions, there is no person with more authority or higher than the earl.   The administration of the region Silverveil is also ran from Ocharia, with both parties operating out of the Green Keep.

Infrastructure

Ocharia began as a strategically located trading center, and it remains, above all, a crucial transportation hub and distribution center for waterborne commerce. The port is one of the most advanced in the entire world, due to its importance, and Ocharians have revolutionized the way that commerce is handled and administered. While they are not the most skilled seafarers and navigators, Ocharians understand industry above all else. The only city that would rival Ocharia's trading value and production would be that of Grand City, one of Ocharia's most important partners.   The city was built specially due to the unstable land that it was situated on. It is one of the few cities in Malnova to be constructed out of brick, instead of stone, giving it a unique look and feel, as well as its major roads being made of cobblestone.   The Green Keep is one of Ocharia's most symbolic features, a large castle that was built over a thousand years ago that gets its name from the ivy that has completely covered its facade. Due to the climate Ocharia is in, the city is incredibly fertile to plant life and is noted for its impressive arboretum, herbology center, and apothecary, all of which are rivaled by none in Malnova.

Guilds and Factions

There is a campus of the Arcane College present on the southern side of the river that has been operating since 1027 TR, and enjoys a considerable amount of enrollment each year.   Another more infamous organizations of Ocharia is the Thieves Guild. Crime being a severe issue in Ocharia, the Thieves Guild finds their base here and conducts most of its operations from the Undercity, a system of catacombs and storm ducts meant to help water flow in the system in case of flooding. There is also a sizable population of drug dealers and smugglers within Ocharia.

History

The date Ocharia was officially settled remains a mystery, as since humans have migrated to the southern shores of Malnova there has been a settlement here. The first date we have recorded dealing with Ocharia is from 57 TR, when the Green Keep first started to be constructed. It was finished in 127 TR. In 579 TR, Ocharia finished construction on its walls, which proved invaluable when the neighboring Kingdom of Vannareid attempted to siege the city during a war. The city remained protected by the walls and the direction of the Ocharian general Jon Geralt, who is now an important and commemorated figure in Ocharian history.   The city saw massive growth from 600-1000 TR as the city began to capitalize on its advantageous position along the southern coast and as its relationship with Grand City strengthened. It has seen numerous battles and wars over the years, but is one of the few major cities in Malnova to have never fallen.

Geography

Ocharia has a climate that is humid subtropical, with short, generally mild winters and hot, humid summers. The city is situated on the mouth of the Peresh River as it flows into the Malseka Gulf. Due to its climate and location, Ocharia hosts a large variety of flora and fauna.
