Hazard City has only one real drug, it can be smoked, snorted, mainlined, even eaten. Once ingested it nearly impossible to stop.
During WW2 an experiment took place. The experiment took a substance and injected it into prisoners. The hope was they would manifest a mutation. Nothing became of it, others tried since, but every time resulting in failure. At least that was what the doctor thought...
In 1990, a scientist named Jericho King ran a DNA test on ten of the failed experiments. All ten came back with an extra pair of chromosomes attached to their DNA. These chromosomes appeared blank from the first test, and when the subjects were recalled the chromosomes were showed to be a redundant set. All but one, the first test showed the chromosomes marked with a set allowed for rapid cell splitting and reforming. Dr. Clark thought it could lead to the subject healing quicker from cell damage. Unfortunately, it could not be proven because the subject's name was lost.
After Polycephaly Industries looked into trying to use the markings. The result Nightsmoke.
Nightsmoke searched the user's DNA for the extra chromosomes. If it doesn't find them the drug attempts to create a pair mutating the user. This will normally kill the user. If it doesn't, not taking the drug will result in a break down of cells. Short term users of the drug will survive, long term will die in a painful way. A long term user can be identified by the blue color of their eyes along with small blue sores on their body.
Once the drug builds in your system your body is mutated. Forced mutation can result in a breakdown of the cells, but more Nightsmoke can stabilize them for a while. Addicts are considered a plague on the streets as they will do anything for the drug. After a few hours without they will begin to feel the pain. Their chest will feel like it is being ripped apart. They will press beat against themselves cutting themselves to attempt to take away the pain as their mind breaks down. At this point, they will charge at the first person they see and attack.
The mutation can trigger two ways.
The original mutation is considered survival chromosomes that activate and change the body to allow it to survive a fatal injury. Nightsmoke will change this to a degree, the mutation will still activate to allow you to survive, but will also take on elemental energies. This can wildly change the body of the mutant.
The second method is more controlled. The subject is given the drug and monitored and trained to use a set of abilities, normally mental strain. This method can take years to work, if at all, but will normally result in the mutation the controllers want.
Nightsmoke is easily the most deadly drug on the planet. The streets of Hazard City are more dangerous for it.
