Survey team Eight

The final scouting party dispatched to the surface of Haven, they bore the honor of verifying the final choice of settlement location, setting the fate of the entire colony. Should they fail in their duty, and make a poor choice, the settlement would not flourish, so they undertook their task with the utmost care. They readied themselves in the dimly lit corridors of the homeship, dining on a nutritious breakfast of chia paste on kelp crackers, goat cheese, dried tomato, rosted peppers, and pollen cakes, washed down with an energizing and nootropic special herb tea. They addressed the watch crew with a short speech about perserverance, then proceeded to the dropship. Once inside, they bolstered themselves with kind encouraging gestures and words and set sail to the surface, detacting without issue at hour EXACTTIME. They shoved off at about 0.5Mps for a few minutes toward orbital retrograde, slowing and simultaneously shrinking their orbit while putting safe distance from the station for faster maneuvers. Once the homeship was but a twinkling gem in the sky, they fired the main insertion engine, pushing hard against their orbital speed to decline thier path toward the surface of the planet. Since this planet had a moderately thick atmosphere, retrobraking rockets could be unfitted in favor of expedition pods, and instead the craft would use special chambered paralell fins and parachutes to effect a safe landing as the previous six survey teams had sucessfully done. ~atmospheric entry~ After landing, they checked systems, set up a base camp, and began thier task... ...which they completed with limited success, however the result was a confirmed landing site for the future planned colony. ~they return as heroes~

Demography and Population

The eighth team had nine members all experienced surveyors from the previous survey teams. They trained on simulators to identify ideal settlement conditions by visual recognition and use of survey tools.

Trade & Transport

The dropship they utilized was fitted for atmospheric landing and scouting. It had stores of water and food for a twelve day expedition, and some storage for surface samples to be returned. The ship's biggest component by bulk, was the return engine, which is discarded mid-takeoff as a first stage booster. Orbital insertion and maneuvering were provided thereafter by a combination of vernier motors and compressed-gas RCS thrusters.
